A mum has shared her recipe for making spaghetti bolognese in the microwave – and while some have questioned her methods, others have hailed the hack as a ‘lifesaver’
Making spaghetti bolognese has never been easier with this handy time-saving hack.
Finding time to cook healthy meals can be tricky when so many of us lead incredibly busy lives. Grabbing a ready meal from a supermarket or stopping off at a fast food drive-thru on the way home from work is often far easier than spending your precious free time in the kitchen, but those meals often aren’t good for us.
One mum, however, has come up with the perfect solution to making homemade meals quickly – by using the microwave to cook an entire dinner from scratch. Whitney Ainscough shared a viral video on TikTok in which she used fresh ingredients to make herself a spaghetti bolognese, and did so using nothing but a plastic measuring jug and her microwave.
Whitney – who posts under the username @itsmebadmom – started by pouring frozen mince into her measuring jug and adding freshly chopped onions on top. She then whacked the jug into the microwave for around 10 minutes, pausing to stir the mixture and add in the rest of her onions halfway through.
She explained: “So you want to pop your frozen mince into a jug and then pop it into the microwave. Pop it all in. You’re going to want to pop your onions in and mix them in. The onions go into the jug as well. Then all you do is put that in the microwave and it will cook lovely, as it goes down you can add more onions.”
Once her mince and onions were cooked, Whitney took the jug out of her microwave and said all that was left to do was add in the other bolognese ingredients, such as chopped tomatoes, garlic, and salt. The video did not show the process of her adding these ingredients, but stated: “Add all that into here, whack it back in for five minutes and it will be ready.”
Whitney also didn’t show herself making pasta, but indicated you could also cook that in the microwave as she told viewers to “pop your pasta in a jug too and get that ready”. She then captioned her clip stating the trick was “quick and easy”, and could be used to make a dinner that “tastes delicious”.
The mum’s video has been viewed 1.7 million times, and people aren’t quite sure what to make of the cooking hack. Whitney does post some satire content and has previously made parody videos where she puts inappropriate snacks and items into her “son’s lunchbox” – so some commenters were unsure if the spaghetti bolognese trick was real.
One person said: “I refuse to believe this is a thing,” while another added: “I can’t tell if this is a joke or real.”
But others jumped to the defence of the hack, stating it could be a “lifesaver” for people who don’t have access to a cooker, especially those living in temporary accommodation without full kitchen facilities.
Someone stated: “Might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but for people with no cooker this could be a lifesaver seeing healthy meals available.” Someone else wrote: “I lived in temporary accommodation (a room) with a microwave and lived off ready meals, cous cous and bulgar wheat. I never thought of this,” and a third added: “She’s doing better than chicken nuggets and chips so I think people should calm down off her a little.”
