A mum-to-be was left outraged when people at her baby shower were ‘confused’ over her choice of baby name for her little boy, as some assumed it must have been spelt incorrectly

What you name your baby is up to you, but that doesn’t mean everyone else has to like it.

People have their own tastes when it comes to baby names. Some parents like to follow tradition and keep things simple with a timeless and classic name, while others want a moniker they feel is a bit more unique. There’s no right or wrong way to name your little one, as long as you’re not setting them up for embarrassment with a name that leaves them with awkward initials or an unfortunate nickname.

You also have to accept that no matter what name you choose, not everyone you meet is going to like it. Some will think it’s the worst name they’ve ever heard, even if it’s a popular one. This is why many parents choose not to tell other people what name they’ve picked until the baby is born.

One mum-to-be is facing that predicament after she held a baby shower for her impending arrival in which she also revealed her little one’s name with a special cake made in advance.

The mum’s friend who attended the party explained in a post on Reddit the couple had opted for a “burner cake”, where you’re supposed to take a flame to the top layer of the cake which burns away to reveal something underneath. Once the top layer was removed, guests could see the name of the couple’s son – Tihyrs.

And the reaction they got from their guests was not what they expected. Many were “confused” and some even apologised to the mum on behalf of the cake company, as they thought it must have been a typo.

In her post, the friend wrote: “Everyone’s reaction was rather comical, lots of groans and confused muttering from the elder guests. The rest of the party was really uncomfortable and weird for the expecting parents as everyone was coming up to apologise for the baker’s terrible spelling/typo.

“My friend laughed it off but I could tell she was offended by it. She’d been bragging about how she has the ‘perfect, unique name that no other child will have’. Yeah, probably because no child would want it.”

Commenters on the post were equally baffled by the mum’s strange name suggestion, as many speculated how it should be pronounced – with “Tyrese” being the most popular suggestion.

One person said: “I couldn’t be happier that she decided to reveal the name at this party… hopefully this keeps her from naming her baby a name that is really unpronounceable. The universe wins this one.”

Another added: “Sounds like a medical term, like an irritation of some sort.”
