An anonymous mum has hit out at her family for making ‘judgemental’ comments about her son’s name as they told her it’s not a ‘good idea’ – but she refuses to change it
Your choice of baby name is never going to please everyone.
When it comes to picking out a moniker for your little one, you’re almost always going to find some people who don’t like it. If you pick a classic baby name, you’ll no doubt get comments from some claiming it’s too “common”, while choosing a unique moniker is sure to raise some eyebrows, too.
In the end, you should choose a name that you like and try not to worry about what everyone else thinks. That’s the mantra one mum has had to live by after she told her family the name she’s chosen for her second child – as she received every judgemental comment under the sun, including people telling her it’s not a “good idea”.
In a post on Reddit, the mum said she’s naming her son Atticus and has been told by her husband’s family the moniker is “weird” and they wouldn’t dream of naming a child that. She said they also made similar comments when her first son, Sterling, and she’s tired of the “unnecessary” comments.
She wrote: “I’m super annoyed, so I’m just here to rant. We are having a second boy, and we are naming him Atticus. I love the name, and so does my husband, but my husband’s family hates it and keeps making unnecessary comments like ‘I wouldn’t name my kid that’, ‘that’s a weird name’, and ‘like the book? Are you sure? I don’t think that’s a good idea’.
“With my first son, they didn’t like his name either; his name is Sterling, and also made unnecessary comments. Anyways. I’m 32 weeks pregnant and stressed and annoyed about it. I can’t think of any other boy name I like, besides, me and my side of the family has been calling him that since I was 10 weeks so I feel like his name has already been chosen.”
The mum added in the comments that she wouldn’t care if it was just strangers making cruel comments about her son’s name, but given that it’s family “gets to” her. However, she noted she was definitely going to stick with the name no matter what anyone else has to say about it.
Commenters on the post were firmly on the woman’s side, with many of them encouraging her to ignore the comments and proceed with whatever name makes her happy.
One person said: “People will always find bad things to say about a name. If you love the name, go for it! You will regret it if you listen to them.” Another added: “Next time they say something, just reply with ‘Well, good thing it’s not your child then’ and go on about your day as normal.”
A third wrote: “People have strong opinions on names all the time, but you have to have enough confidence in and love for the name to be happy with it despite the opposing opinions – especially when choosing something more out there like Atticus! If you love the name, then use it. If the negative reaction is something you really can’t handle, then keep exploring – you’re not tied to a name until after the baby is here!”
