A woman has blasted her inconsiderate boyfriend who ordered her to change her pet’s name, but she says this will only confuse her two-year-old pet and isn’t worth it
A woman has been left gobsmacked after her ‘entitled’ boyfriend ordered her to change her cat’s name to ‘avoid confusion’. The 27-year-old explained how she adopted a cat named Luna two years ago – and has completely fallen in love with her.
She says the tabby cat has become an “essential part” of her life and even helped her through a breakup last year. But now, her boyfriend wants her to rename her pet simply because she shares a name with his sister and he claims this could cause unnecessary confusion. Taking to Reddit, she said: “I’ve started dating someone new, Tom, 29, and things have been going really well.
“Recently, we decided to move in together, which I was very excited about. Tom loves Luna, and Luna seems to like him too. Everything seemed perfect until Tom dropped a bombshell.
“Tom has a sister named Luna, 24. He mentioned that it’s weird for him to call my cat the same name as his sister and asked if I would consider changing her name to avoid confusion.
“I laughed at first, thinking he was joking, but he was serious. He suggested names like Shadow or Misty, but I can’t imagine calling her anything other than Luna.”
She explained how Luna responds to her name and renaming her now would be too confusing for her cat.
However, Tom refused to take no for an answer – and claims she is being “disrespectful” to his sister for wanting to keep the name.
She added: “It’s part of her identity now, and changing it would be confusing for her. He argued that it’s just a name and she would adapt, but I stood my ground.
“I even suggested using nicknames or calling her Lulu as a compromise, but he insists that it’s still too similar and uncomfortable for him.
“Things escalated when Tom’s sister found out and sided with him, saying it’s disrespectful to keep the name. She even accused me of being insensitive to their feelings.
“Now, Tom is upset, and it’s causing tension between us. Some friends think I should just change the name to keep the peace, while others agree that it’s unreasonable to expect me to change my cat’s name.”
Commenting on her post, one user said: “What? That’s rude of him to ask in my opinion. It would be one thing if Luna was still a kitten and could learn another name, but she’s known it for two years!
“You can’t change it now, you’re right it will be too confusing. Plus it’s like… not like he didn’t know the cats name before deciding to move in?”
Another user added: “Dump the boyfriend, keep the cat name. Pro tip, maybe his sister can change her name since it’s just a name.”
A third user said: “Ask Tom instead how he feels about re-naming his sister Shadow or Misty. He’s being ridiculous. And, while this doesn’t seem like the hill to die in, it probably is.”
