A woman revealed that she was taken aback by her husband’s birthday surprise when she turned 50, after he got her something unexpected – and people were quick to share their support
A woman shared her shock after her husband revealed her big surprise for her 50th birthday, and it was nothing like she’d expected.
Gift giving can be hard. While some people are easier to buy buy presents for than others, nothing will beat the feeling you get when you get someone a gift they love.
However, one woman has taken to Reddit to ask for advice after sharing the surprising present her husband bought her for her 50th birthday.
The woman started to say that on to share that on her birthday, her husband had woken her up and told her she had a surprise waiting for her downstairs in their home.
“I go downstairs and see a vacuum, not even wrapped mind you,” she shared. “He said he thought I’d like a new one since the current one doesn’t have the ability to turn off the brush roller when using on hard floors. I never asked for a new one. It works fine.”
She went on to say that that had been the only thing her husband had organised for her birthday.
“Not even a lunch or dinner out,” she wrote, before revealing it came after her husband had talked about ‘doing something special’ for her birthday a month prior.
When she them asked him about it, he said he thought she would have told him when and where she wanted to go, despite never having asked her, according to the Reddit user. Instead, he had repeatedly told her that he had a birthday surprise for her
“Apparently it was a f**king vacuum. We’ve been married 17 years,” she said in the post.
She went on to ask other Reddit users if she was overreacting after having hoped that her husband would have made her birthday more special than it ended up being.
She said: “When he turned 50 I took him to Hawaii. Maybe I’m just being hypersensitive. Turning 50 has been a hard number for me. Parents and grandparents all passed in that decade.”
People were quick to share their support for the woman, with many sharing their own experiences of being disappointed by the gifts given to them by their partners.
“I got scratch off lotto tickets for Xmas from my husband. Married 15 years,” one person shared, while another person said: “My dad got mom towels and kitchen knives one year. That’s the Christmas that lives in infamy. Hearing mom scream ‘I CAN’T WEAR KNIVES’ through a closed door lives rent free in my head.”
Another person shared: “I told my kids when they were young and my partner, never to buy me anything for my birthday or mother’s day that has anything to do with cooking or cleaning.”
Some also went on to share ideas on what the woman should do, to which one person said: “Re-gift it back to him on the next occasion that calls for gifts.”
“Take yourself to Hawaii, and leave the vacuum in the living room,” another user suggested, to which another person added: “Leave him in the living room with the vacuum when you go to Hawaii. Maybe take the vacuum with you to Hawaii and just leave your husband behind.”
