‘My neighbour has held on to fence grudge for 2 years – he needs to let it go’

By staff15 May 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

A man has taken to social media to share how his neighbour was angry at him for doing something two years ago – and he can’t help but think he should just get over it

A man has confessed to accidentally annoying his neighbour over a deed from years ago – and he’s puzzled by the chap’s inability to move on. He recounted that upon settling into their home “almost two years” ago, they wasted no time in erecting a fence “within the first week or two of owning the house.”

Delving deeper, he said: “The other day our neighbour talked to us outside and said how he was going to trim the trees that have branches that hang over our yard, but then we put the fence up.” He unearthed evidence of the longstanding arboreal issue through “These trees have been an issue like this for years and years, based on Google images” which offered a historical peek at the property’s perimeter.

However, the plot thickened as the man revealed on Reddit: “He’s also lived in the house for at least 50 years and seemed annoyed that we put the fence up”.

The homeowner was left scratching his head over why the old-timer would be “annoyed” about the new boundary when his own property appeared neglected.

Painting a picture of decay in the house next door, he candidly described the neighbour’s abode as “falling apart,” branded him a “hoarder” amid the clutter, and lamented the “trash everywhere” around the man’s home.

Moreover, he pointed out that “he does pretty much no maintenance for their property,” with an unruly “three-foot-high bush” left to run wild.

Thus, the fence-fixer was left bemused, wondering why the neighbour would fixate on the fence instead of tending to his own affairs.

He wrote in disbelief: “I can’t get over the fact that he was mad at us for something we did almost two years ago”.

He pointed out the oddity of not mentioning it sooner and instead holding a grudge against them.

Whether you can erect a fence without consulting your neighbour hinges on local regulations, property lines, and any existing covenants or restrictions.

In numerous locales, if the fence is built entirely within your own property lines, there may be no legal requirement to consult your neighbour.

Nonetheless, it’s generally seen as good manners to at least notify or discuss with your neighbour, particularly if the fence could impact them, helping to prevent any future disagreements or confusion – or even them holding a grudge against you further down the line.

Moreover, certain areas impose rules about fence height, materials, and placement that must be adhered to, regardless of whether the neighbour agrees.

For fences intended to be placed on a shared or boundary line, obtaining your neighbour’s consent is usually necessary.

It’s prudent to review local planning laws or homeowner association guidelines to ensure you’re not breaching any regulations.
