‘My newborn was in intensive care – but all my family did was complain about his name’

A new mum said she was left feeling ‘upset’ and ‘hurt’ after her family refused to stop moaning about her son’s name – despite him being in intensive care when born

Expecting a newborn brings anticipation of family support, but a new mum claimed her relatives have been more of a headache than help since she gave birth just three days ago, with non-stop moans about her son’s name.

The woman had a difficult delivery, undergoing an emergency C-section at 36 and a half weeks, leaving her newborn in the NICU back in 2024. But rather than receiving the rest and aid she needed from her family, she’s been bombarded with complaints about her baby boy’s chosen name.

Taking to Reddit to share her ordeal, the mum recounted how she and her partner decided on the name Frost for their son, a moniker resonating with deep significance for them and befitting the difficulties of her pregnancy.

She posted: “Since announcing my son’s birth, my family has made it pretty clear how much they do not like his unique name. My husband and I have stated how the name has multiple meanings for us and that we chose the name because it is a strong name.

“We also explained that because my pregnancy was high-risk and we all went through a lot, we really wanted him to have a name that showed just how strong he is.

“But it’s been three days and my family has not stopped complaining about the name and telling us to change it for fear of him being bullied or hating it later in life.”

The mum added her “mental health is struggling with all this negativity”, especially given the challenges she faced with her infant son in the NICU.

She said: “It just feels so pointless at this point and it’s just so upsetting since this is meant to be a time for celebration.”

Online commentators empathised with the mother’s situation, yet several noted her choice of the baby’s name as extraordinary, advising she be prepared for potential judgement or criticism.

One person said: “I’m usually one for unique names but Frost is definitely going to lead to some teasing and bullying throughout his entire life,” while another voiced concern: “Oh Lord, you set up that kid for a life time of bullying. Listen to your family and change his name.”

Another contributor offered a gentler perspective, saying: “I haven’t read all the comments and I’m not sure if anyone has already said this but I hope that whatever you call your son, he’s all right and gets out of the NICU.”
