‘My partner died suddenly at 44 – now I fear losing home for my six kids’

A single mum of six is battling to keep her family home after her ‘healthy’ partner passed away unexpectedly from a stroke while doing a bit of gardening. Amanda Conlon, 40, is left in a tough spot, calling on the kindness of strangers to help raise £200,000 to clear her mortgage, following the untimely passing of her partner Clint Robinson, 44, who succumbed to a stroke in July 2024.

The tragedy unfolded as Clint was enjoying some gardening on his veg patch one sunny Thursday morning when he started to feel off and staggered inside to seek aid from Amanda, who was expecting their child.

Amanda said: “While I rang 999 he was still able to talk a little bit – they were asking what happened and he said he’d got a headache and went dizzy. He went to call our two year old and he said her name wouldn’t come out of his mouth.”

After suffering the stroke, Clint found himself in the care of the Scunthorpe General Hospital’s stroke unit, where he noted the loss of sensation on his left side. A distressed Amanda trailed the ambulance to the hospital just to be with him, only to be convinced by a nurse that she should let Clint get some much-needed rest, with reassurances he would bounce back the next day.

However, when Amanda tried to visit at 8pm, she said she was denied access but told everything was under control. Tragically, by morning, Amanda’s fears were realised — doctors confirmed Clint was reacting solely to touch and an overnight brain bleed had worsened.

Amanda faced the heart-wrenching decision to switch off her partner’s life support after being informed he had ‘no activity’ in his brain, following a 10-day vigil in intensive care. She expressed her anguish over feeling robbed of her final moments with her fiancé, whom she was set to marry next year, due to the hospital’s visiting restrictions.

She said: “I called at midnight and they said ‘he’s fine, he’s been asking for you quite a lot but he’s gone to sleep now’, I said ‘please can I come and sit with him then’. I just feel like they took that away from me – any time I could have had left with him, they took it away because they told me he was going to be fine.”

Compounding her grief, Amanda said that the mortgage on their home was solely in Clint’s name and he had no life insurance, having cancelled it during financial struggles amid the Covid pandemic. Now, the bereaved mother faces the threat of losing her home unless she can manage to remortgage or pay it off entirely.

Having lost her own parents at the age of nine, Amanda, who is a teacher trainer by profession, has no familial financial support to fall back on. As a single mother of six children, ranging from five months to 20 years old, she has launched an online fundraiser to settle Clint’s mortgage and secure her family’s housing.

So far, Amanda has raised about £15,000, which is significant yet still less than 10% of what is needed.

She explained: “The amount I’m trying to raise is a substantial amount – I don’t want anyone to think ‘oh, wouldn’t we all like our mortgage to be paid’.

“The reason why I’ve done it is because I think if I died tomorrow then my children have got a home – it would be my oldest daughter who would need to look after them.

“If anything were to happen to me, they would have that security. If everybody just put in £1, if 200,000 people put in £1, that would make all the difference.

“I’m not asking anybody for a large amount, I don’t even like asking anybody for anything, but I’ve always helped people and Clint has always helped people. He always told the children that if anybody needs help, it’s really important to help.”

Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust has been contacted for comment.
