‘My son said he was going out to clear his head – he never came back to me’

A desperate mum has made a heartfelt appeal for information after her son Ali Durrani vanished earlier this year. She says her family is living with constant fear and uncertainty

A desperate mum has made a heartfelt appeal for information after her son Ali Durrani vanished earlier this year, saying her family is living in constant fear and uncertainty.

Ali Durrani, 32, who suffers from anxiety, disappeared from his family home in Stirchley, Birmingham, on February 5 – something which his family have described as completely out of character.

While they continue to hope for his safe return, his mum Mahjabeen, 56, told The Mirror: “Ali told me he was going out for a walk, which he enjoyed doing to clear his head. He said, ‘I’m going out, mummy,’ and I didn’t think anything of it. But he never came back.”

Police inquiries later established that Ali was last seen on CCTV in Turves Green, Northfield, talking to a woman at a bus stop. It is believed he then caught a bus towards Northfield and Smethwick.

DEMAND ACTION FOR MISSING PEOPLE

Too many missing people are falling through the cracks – harmed while away, and ignored when they return.

We need a proper government strategy led by the Home Office, Education, and Health departments to stop this crisis.

Right now, there’s no real support. People go missing again and again – yet no one’s asking why.

We’re calling for:

  • A new national strategy for missing children and adults
  • Proper support for missing people when they return
  • Investment to stop people going missing in the first place

At 10,000 signatures, the government has to respond. At 100,000, it will be debated in Parliament. That’s our goal – real action.

You can help by signing our petition here.

Since then, there has been no trace of him and neither his bank account nor his social media accounts have been used. The Mirror is issuing this plea for help as part of our Missed campaign, which is supported by the Missing People charity. Ali is one of more then 170,000 people who go missing every year – which means someone is reported missing every 90 seconds in the UK.

“We’re living with constant anxiety and fear. Our family is incomplete without him,” Mahjabeen continued. “His father and younger brother are distraught. We can’t find peace or carry on with our lives while Ali is missing. We just need answers.”

Ali is described as being of medium build, with black hair and a black beard.

Officers from West Midlands Police have been working on the case and have shared with the family that there has been no further information, either to confirm his safety or otherwise.

“We are so grateful to West Midlands Police for their efforts so far, and we are pleading with them to continue the search,” says Mahjabeen. “We need them to keep investigating, keep looking for him. Please don’t give up on Ali.

“There is no evidence to say he is no longer with us, and no news of his whereabouts. We just want him home. If anyone has seen Ali or has any information, please come forward. Your help could bring him back to us.”

Ali is described as being of medium build, with black hair and a black beard. He was last seen wearing a khaki raincoat, black jeans, and brown lace-up shoes. Anyone who has seen Ali or has any information about his disappearance is urged to contact West Midlands Police on 999, quoting PID number 1097257 Log no: 140-6/02/25

Because every missing person, no matter their background or circumstances, is someone’s loved one. And they are always Missed.
