Ingleby Barwick: Major search underway near river for 13-year-old boy

Police have found a body during water searches for a missing teenage boy. Mylo Capilla, aged 13, was last seen at 9pm on Thursday at Ramsey Gardens in Ingleby Barwick, Teesside, where he is believed to have entered a section of the River Tees known locally as the ‘muddies’.

He was reported missing a short time later, sparking a major overnight search involving police, divers and a mountain rescue team. Police said tonight that “the body of a boy” had been found, and that Mylo’s parents have been informed. Formal identification has not yet taken place. A spokesperson for Cleveland Police said in a statement: “Very sadly, police and partner agencies searching the river for 13-year-old Mylo Capilla at Ingleby Barwick have found the body of a boy.

Mylo Capilla RECAP: Body found in search for missing 13-year-old

“Whilst formal identification has yet to take place, Mylo’s parents have been informed and they continue to be supported by specially trained officers. All our thoughts are with Mylo’s family and friends as well as with the wider community at this extremely difficult time.”

Speaking earlier before the police announcement, Mylo’s dad said he felt “numb” and “helpless” as the large-scale search for his son continued.

“I feel numb, I feel helpess. I’ve just been walking around again there searching,” Dan Capilla, 43, told Teesside Live. “I just don’t know what to do.”

Dan, a design engineer, said he last saw Mylo at 4pm yesterday and was alerted to his disappearance shortly after 9pm after Mylo’s mum, who he is separated from, raised the alarm.

He said: “I didn’t sleep at all last night and we were just out searching, driving around in the car, taking turns because we wanted someone in the house in case he came back.

“The emergency services have been amazing, and the response from members of the public, with the amount of people searching is unbelieveable. The streets were full of people. We thank you, and appreciate you so much.”

One local resident told reporters that the ‘Muddies’ in Ramsey Gardens included a large area along the riverbank, and was a popular place for children and young people to play.

A police cordon was in place today along a 200-metre stretch of Ramsey Gardens to keep the public away from the search area.

Dozens of concerned members of the public had attempted to join the search last night, with officers asking them to not enter the River Tees and to instead search around streets and areas in the estate.

Cleveland Fire and Rescue Service was also on the scene.
