WARNING – DISTRESSING CONTENT: Dr Cas Shotter Weetman directly addressed Mohamed Iidow, her daughter’s killer, during the trial at the Old Bailey, asking him a pointed question
The mum of murdered Natalie Shotter levelled her daughter’s killer a six-word question after she was shown CCTV footage of her daughter’s horrific rape.
Natalie, 37, was raped “over and over again” by twisted Mohamed Iidow, who attacked the mum-of-three while she was passed out in Southall Park, west London, after a night out. Jurors had heard how the former child stage star died from a heart attack caused by the repeated oral rapes, and found Iidow, 35, guilty of her rape and manslaughter.
Iidow – who was captured in the act on CCTV footage that was shown during the trial at the Old Bailey – was sentenced to life by Judge Richard Marks KC on Friday with a minimum term of 10 years and eight months, telling the rapist he was “wicked and utterly reckless” when he attacked the mum.
During a heartbreaking testimony in which she addressed Iidow directly, Ms Shotter’s mum, NHS cardiology practitioner Dr Cas Shotter Weetman, asked the killer a pointed question about his horrific act.
Dr Shotter Weetman talked about “compassionate” Ms Shotter, who she said had a “good heart” before directly addressing Iidow, who she branded a “predator”. She said: “She was brilliant at her job, kind to staff and patients alike. The day I found out about Nat, I felt absolutely sick and I felt a terrible feeling of doom. I was in absolute shock.
“I then had to later learn from the police that my daughter had died in these horrific circumstances. When Mohamed Iidow – and that is the only time I will say his name – was finally charged I was so glad but I realised everything was still to come. Watching the CCTV of my daughter being raped was desperately sad to see. No mother should have to see that.”
Addressing the defendant, she added that Iidow’s “disgusting” actions had “left gaping holes in the lives of everyone who loved her” and asked him: “Why did you not stop yourself and think what am I doing?” She continued: “Hearing medical evidence of how you caused my daughter’s death destroyed my family.
“I felt such anger my daughter had gone to the park on a night out enjoying herself and was assaulted by a predator. No woman should have to fear going to a park and sitting on a bench- it is disgusting. Why did you not stop yourself and think what am I doing? You preyed on a vulnerable woman. Her killing has left gaping holes in the lives of everyone who loved her..”
The court heard that Iidow has previous convictions for online sexual communication with a child, offences for which he was jailed for two years and 10 months. The offences were committed after he raped Ms Shotter and was arrested, and while he was on bail following a police interview. The “child” Iidow was speaking to was actually an undercover police officer.
