Aldi is once again the cheapest UK supermarket after being beaten by Lidl last month.

The latest supermarket price comparison by Which? shows a shop with 75 items cost £127.92 on average at Aldi in August 2025. This is 38p cheaper than the same shop at Lidl with its loyalty scheme Lidl Plus, which cost £128.30 on average.

While Lidl was the cheapest supermarket in July, it was back to second place this month. The list of 75 items included both branded and own-brand items, such as Birds Eye Peas, Hovis bread, milk and butter.

Tesco Clubcard members paid £142.36 on average, while without a Clubcard, the Tesco shop cost £145.01. For those using a Sainsbury’s Nectar card, the shopping list came to £144.75 on average, or £149.02 without a Nectar card.

This month, for a bigger list of 190 items, Asda continues to be the cheapest supermarket.

Aldi and Lidl are not included in this comparison as they have a smaller range of products compared to the other supermarkets. The bigger shop at Asda cost £474.86 on average, cheaper than Tesco with a Clubcard by £11.03 (£485.89).

Waitrose was the most expensive on average for both the smaller and larger shop, with the smaller shop costing £172.61 – £44.69 more expensive than Aldi – and the bigger shop coming to £548.14.

Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, said: “Aldi is back on form as the UK’s cheapest supermarket in August, according to our latest price analysis, showing that it continues to represent great value without the need for membership prices.

“When it comes to a larger trolley of groceries, Asda holds its own as the cheapest non-discounter supermarket – beating membership prices at Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons. As the nights draw in and the weather gets cooler, rising costs will no doubt be a big worry for many households.

“The good news is that there are savings to be had for those who can shop around, simply choosing one supermarket over another could save you 35%.”
