New detail in Marc Guehi to Liverpool transfer saga hints at real reason for anger

Marc Guehi saw a dream move to Liverpool collapse late on deadline day with Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish seemingly playing a key role in the switch not going through

Marc Guehi was left furious after talks to seal his dream Liverpool transfer were delayed on deadline day, with Steve Parish instead attending a gym session. The Crystal Palace and England defender looked set to complete a sensational move to Anfield on deadline day.

Liverpool had agreed a £35m fee with the Eagles, while he had undergone a medical in London in anticipation of the move. But Palace pulled the plug late on having failed to source a replacement for the defender.

But there was further sources of frustration for the Guehi camp, with crucial talks on Monday seemingly delayed. According to the BBC, Palace chairman Parish only sat down with Guehi and his representatives at 6pm on deadline day – just one hour before the window closed.

Parish, 60, had reportedly been at a fitness class at a Soho gym before making his way over to meet Guehi. A transfer deal sheet had been submitted by Liverpool in an effort to get the move completed, but in the end Parish pulled the plug.

That decision infuriated Guehi who is reportedly considering stepping down as club captain in the aftermath. But one man who will be left delighted is boss Oliver Glasner.

The Austrian had threatened to leave the club should Palace sell Guehi in the closing hours of the window. Speaking at the weekend, he said: “We need to keep Marc if we want to play a successful season.

“We have an agreement that if we’re selling Marc we have the right replacement in. We wanted to have this replacement at the beginning of the pre-season.

“There’s no replacement in the building, it’s clear one part of the agreement is not fulfilled. That means we can’t sell Marc.

“It’s not a wish or a gift to Oliver Glasner, it’s necessary for playing a successful season. It’s a tempting situation but if we want to progress, we have to keep him. If we sell we accept a step back.”

Palace did manage to sign a defender on deadline day as Jaydee Canvot, 19, arrived from French side Toulouse. But he is seen more as one for the future as opposed to a replacement for Guehi.

Guehi will not immediately return to Selhurst Park having been called up into Thomas Tuchel’s latest England squad for upcoming World cup qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia.

Palace’s next Premier League fixture pits them against newly-promoted Sunderland at Selhurst Park on Saturday, September 13.
