New mum dies after doctors leave bandage inside her body during childbirth

By staff26 October 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

A new mother has tragically died after doctors left bandages inside her after she gave birth to her son, resulting in a deadly infection, and medics didn’t realise what had happened until it was too late

A young woman has died under tragic circumstances after doctors allegedly left a surgical bandage inside her abdomen while stitching up her incision after childbirth.

In January of this year, Jyoti Pal welcomed her son via Caesarean section at a private hospital. It’s alleged that, during this procedure, medics left a bandage inside her abdomen before stitching her up. Although Jyoti initially appeared to be recovering well, just a few days after she gave birth, the 26-year-old began experiencing agonising abdominal pain, and returned to the same hospital to figure out what exactly was going on.

Jyoti’s husband, Prajjwal Pal, recalled: “A few days later, Jyoti began experiencing abdominal pain, after which she was taken to the same hospital, but doctors were unable to explain the cause.”

Tragically, doctors reportedly failed to determine the source of her suffering, and Jyoti’s condition continued to deteriorate. After she was brought to another hospital, medics who examined her finally detected the bandage that had, by that point, resulted in a very serious infection. Treatment was given, but sadly, Jyoti died from her illness.

Now, Jyoti’s heartbroken husband, Prajjwal, has filed a complaint against the hospital in Dehradun, India, where their son was delivered, and the doctors who performed the caesarean section.

This is as per the news agency PTI, which reports that city authorities have now launched an investigation into Jyoti’s death, as confirmed by officials on Wednesday, October 22. Chief medical officer of the district, Manoj Sharma, has stated that the probe into this alleged negligence was ordered on Tuesday, October 21.

As reported by the Indian Express, Sharma said: “In January, she underwent surgery for childbirth at a private hospital in Araghar. […] They approached another hospital to diagnose the cause of the chronic pain she had been suffering. The ultrasound and computed tomography scan showed the presence of a gauze piece in her abdomen.” He added: “We have to investigate the claims of negligence against the hospital where her delivery took place.”

Emphasising that staff were responsible for ensuring all medical instruments and materials were accounted for, Sharma continued: “Gauzes left behind cause pain, but rarely deaths, and it needs to be probed as to why this resulted in such a prolonged infection. We need to investigate why this resulted in the death. A summons has been issued to the personnel and doctors who undertook the operation. Prima facie, they are trained and experienced, but we have yet to examine documents.”

The hospital, which reportedly did not respond to queries from the publication, confirmed that the institution had been closed in light of the ongoing inquiry. Going forward, a four-person committee led by Sharma will probe Jyoti’s death, which awaits the post-mortem report. It’s expected that the probe committee will put forward its findings soon.
