New O2 switch off alert – your phone could stop working on this excact date

By staff3 October 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

O2 is warning customers that its 3G signal will be switched off soon.

There’s a fresh alert from the team at O2, and it could leave some without access to the internet and messaging apps such as WhatsApp. The latest update has been issued ahead of the UK network (which is now part of Virgin Media) switching off its older 3G technology in more UK locations.

Virgin Media O2’s 3G signal has already been disconnected in places such as Durham, Norwich, Telford, Guildford, Watford and Torquay – now parts of Scotland are next on the list.

Once the off button is pressed by O2 on November 5, 2025, anyone with a 3G-only device can no longer access data services. That means emails can’t be sent, WhatsApp messages read, or websites viewed when away from Wi-Fi. Phone calls and standard SMS texts will still be available, but that’s it.

It has been confirmed that those living in the eastern areas of the country, such as Aberdeen and Dundee, will see 3G disappear first.

By the end of 2025, O2 plans to have switched off 3G across the whole of the UK.

Why is 3G being turned off?

3G was first launched back in 2003. It’s now a very old technology that is rarely used, as it can no longer keep pace with modern needs.

It’s expensive to run and is also using up precious bandwidth that could be used for better 4G and 5G signals. As a quick guide, 3G is only capable of supplying speeds at around 3Mbps – that’s compared to 4G and 5G, which can push things to 100Mbps.

What happens if you are affected?

It’s worth noting that this block should only affect a small number of people, as most consumers now have 4G and 5G-ready phones in their pockets.

O2 says that some 3G customers are being offered a 4G-ready device free of charge. Others who don’t currently have a 4G handset or SIM are able to upgrade to a new device at a reduced price.

Other networks, including EE and Vodafone, have already shut things down in a bid to free up some much-needed network space.

Speaking about changes, Jeanie York, Virgin Media O2’s Chief Technology Officer, said: “We’re fast approaching the end of 2025 and 3G will soon be a thing of the past, replaced by faster, more reliable and more energy-efficient 4G and 5G networks that give our customers a better experience.

“We have already successfully withdrawn 3G in a number of UK locations, and in November we’ll be turning our attention to large areas of Scotland. We know that the vast majority of our customers already have a 4G or 5G handset and will not have to take any action, and we’re writing directly to those who will be impacted to provide guidance and support.

“While customers without a 4G or 5G device in Scotland are particularly urged to take swift action, regardless of where you live in the UK, you will need to upgrade very soon in order to continue using mobile data after 3G is switched off, so please do take action if you need to.”
