Newcastle ended their long trophy drought by beating Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium on Sunday and plans to celebrate with supporters have been put on pause for now
It’s the morning after the night before and Newcastle are in no mood to stop celebrating their Carabao Cup win – but an open top bus parade will have to wait.
The Magpies beat Liverpool at Wembley on Sunday, local boy Dan Burn and Swedish sensation Alexander Isak scoring the goals. Federico Chiesa had made it a nervous finish for Eddie Howe’s men but they did more than enough to get on the line.
Players, staff and fans alike have all been celebrating since, with outpouring emotions on the banks of both the Thames and the Tyne. And attention has now turned to Newcastle taking the trophy back to the Toon and celebrating further with their supporters.
But an open top bus parade will not take place over the coming weeks, and looks more likely to tbe scheduled for the end of the season. The international break has made the logistics of a parade very difficult.
A number of stars are set to jet off to join up with their national teams for the coming fortnight, meaning they will not be available. Meanwhile, the remaining players will fly to Dubai for a period of warm-weather training.
According to Mail Online, the squad have been given a full day off so could potentially toast their historic success in the gulf state. The EFL have also apparently confirmed that there is no rule preventing Newcastle from taking their newly-acquired trophy on the flight to Dubai.
Speaking about his side’s celebrations, boss Eddie Howe said: “With such a long wait for a trophy, this will be a day that I’m sure everyone will never forget. We will never forget it. I certainly won’t. I think there’s different ways to win trophies.
“Today we won it in the best way. We played a brilliant opponent, they’ve been the best team in the Premier League all season by quite a long way. And for me, we were the better team.

“I feel amazing, it is an incredible day. I was so, so pleased with our performance, it was not a lucky win, thoroughly deserved. I am drenched in alcohol from Joelinton and the rest of the squad, it’s a great moment, it is about embracing the success. We have to try and enjoy the moment and take it all in.”
Former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan has already given his take on a potential open top bus parade. He suggested Newcastle would be fully deserving, while also cheekily demanding they start any procession at the home of their bitter rivals Sunderland.
Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: “Listen, they’ve got this unique set of fans that will celebrate with them so why not? They’ve obviously got a season to continue with and open top bus celebrations more often than not tend to be at the end of the season because the season is finished and you’re celebrating the FA Cup final win or the Premier League win, your race is run to some extent.”
He added: “Do I think Newcastle should celebrate? Yes. Do I think that they deserve to celebrate if they beat Liverpool in the final? Absolutely. Do I think people will ridicule it and take the mickey out of it? They would.
“They’d go: ‘what you doing celebrating the League Cup?’ So what? They’re not Newcastle fans, who cares what they think? I would imagine if they won the League Cup, Newcastle fans would be out in their droves celebrating their team and cheering them along the pathway wherever the bus goes to. Starting from the Stadium of Light.”
