Nigel Farage savaged over shamed Russia bribe MEP in brutal clash

Reform chief Nigel Farage was brutally cut down by Foreign Office minister Stephen Doughty over his links to shamed politician Nathan Gill

Nigel Farage was savaged in the Commons over his disgraced Reform ally who admitted taking Russian bribes.

Foreign Office minister Stephen Doughty went on the attack in a frosty exchange over national security. Mr Doughty said he was surprised the Reform UK leader “had the gall” to gripe after senior Reform figure Nathan Gill admitted eight counts of bribery after making statements in favour of Russia.

The shamed 52-year-old former UKIP and Brexit Party MEP, who was Reform’s leader in Wales until 2021, is set to be sentenced next month. Gill described Mr Farage as a “friend and colleague” and has been repeatedly seen alongside him over the years.

During a debate on the Chagos Islands – a British Indian Ocean Terroritory which is transferred to Mauritius – Mr Farage fumed: “Mauritius will not honour the terms of this treaty. Mauritius is poor. It is on the verge of bankruptcy.

“It will be bought by Chinese money, and China is negotiating leases already.” He went on to claim that US President Donald Trump – a pal of his – would be upset that Chinese tech firm Huawei is installing “safe city” cameras all over Mauritius.

But Labour minister Mr Doughty was having none of it. He shot back: “I’m surprised that the honourable gentleman has the gall to come here and talk about national security today when the former leader of his party in Wales admitted taking bribes from Russia, and when yet again he has been using talking points right from the Kremlin blaming NATO for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Absolutely shameful.”

Gill was elected as a UKIP, and later Brexit Party, MEP between 2014 and 2020. He was leader of UKIP Wales between 2014 and 2016 – while Mr Farage was the national leader.

Gill went on to become leader of Reform UK Wales between March and May 2021. He led the party’s Senedd/Welsh Parliament election campaign – has not been a member since 2021.

Gill, from Llangefni, Anglesey, pleaded guilty to eight counts of bribery between 6 December 2018 and 18 July 2019. He took money from Oleg Voloshyn – who has previously been branded a “pawn” of the Russian security services by the US government – and made speeches in the European Parliament and on TV.

In 2018 he used a parliamentary speech to defend TV channels 112 Ukraine and NewsOne, which are linked to Vladimir Putin ally Viktor Medvedchuk.

Gill gave two contributions in favour of the channels in December 2018 and March 2019. He also appeared on the TV channel speaking in support of Medvedchuk, who was facing criminal proceedings for high treason.

And Gill also arranged MEPs to speak to 112 Ukraine – also hosting a presentation with Mr Medvedchuk in exchange for bribes.

After Gill’s case was heard at the Old Bailey, Commander Dominic Murphy, head of the Met’s counter terrorism command, said: “Our investigation uncovered an elected MEP was taking payments to peddle narratives that would have had the effect of being beneficial towards Russian interests.

“This case goes to the heart of our democratic values and as we’ve shown here, we will not hesitate to investigate and disrupt anyone seeking to harm or undermine these values and our national security.”

Last week Mr Farage said: “I’d known this person for a very long time, I knew him in the European Parliament in the UKIP days to be a God-fearing Christian, somebody that you would think was the least corruptible person that you would know,” he said.

Asked whether he knew Gill was making pro-Russian statements, Farage said: “I didn’t know anything about it.”
