Noel Gallagher has insisted he does not care about the legacy of Oasis or their upcoming live tour – instead claiming he prefers to live in the moment. The guitarist and songwriter made the admission in a new book which also saw him praise an unlikely hero.

In typical no nonsense language, Noel was asked about his own legacy and replied: “I truly, truly couldn’t give a f**k about that. I live in the here and now and right now today, I’m happy with what I’ve done and indeed, what I’m doing.” Noel was speaking in Buddy Holly: Words Of Love – a book that celebrates the life of the late rock and roll musician and songwriter who died in the Fifties.

He is in awe of the simplicity of his hits like That’ll Be The Day and Peggy Sue and Everyday.

Noel said: “Buddy teaches us to keep it simple. You don’t need fancy chords or obtuse lyrics. Buddy’s songs are direct, short and to the point.”

Showing his usual dry humour, Noel then added: “It’s fair to say he wasn’t a big influence on Champagne Supernova.”

In a hand message and autograph in the book Noel also describes Buddy as “the king of the three minute masterpiece” and he has referenced Buddy Holly as an influence in the past.

Other big name musicians also line up in the book to sing his praises and reflect on the influence he had on so many singers and songwriters afterwards.

There are also contributions from Eric Clapton, Dave Grohl, Emmylou Harris, Brian May, Van Morrison, Dolly Parton, Robert Plant, Keith Richards, Ed Sheeran, Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Pete Townshend and Ronnie Wood, among many more. Illustrating their text, each contributor has provided a handwritten dedication to Buddy, their own ‘Words of Love’.

Beatle Paul McCartney says: “He became a hero for us and gave us the idea to go and do it ourselves.”

Mick Jagger says: “You could learn from Buddy Holly how to write songs, the way he put them together. He was a beautiful writer. The greatest. And I mean that – the greatest.”

Noel has been writing recently and was spotted in the studio last week where he was thought to be working on new demos and material.

Next month he will turn his attentions to Oasis and the first band rehearsals are thought to be kicking off ahead of the Oasis Live25 Summer UK tour before the band head off to the US and North and South America as well as Australia.

Noel and Liam will walk on stage for the first time together since the band split in 2009 on July 4 at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium.

The line up for the band is also now thought to have been completed with rehearsals for the whole band also expected to start soon in the coming month.

Liam and Noel Gallagher are bringing in newcomer Joey Waronker on drums alongside more established former Oasis band members on guitars.

The full line up is thought to be Liam Gallagher, Noel Gallagher, Paul “Bonehead” Arthurs, Gem Archer, Andy Bell and Joey Waronker.

The shows will also feature special guests Richard Ashcroft and Cast, who are friends up the band.

  • Buddy Holly: Words of Love is published by Genesis Publications and is out tomorrow with an RRP of £60.
