Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hasn’t managed a team since being sacked by Manchester United in November 2021, although the former striker is open to returning to Old Trafford
Former Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has rejected the chance to manage Norwegian side Molde for the third time.
Molde sacked head coach Erling Moe on Sunday after finishing fifth in the league and losing a cup final. They’re now searching for a new manager, with Solskjaer’s name immediately coming up following his two spells in charge either side of managing Cardiff City.
The ex-United striker hasn’t coached a team since losing his job at Old Trafford three years ago following a poor start to the 2021-22 season. Solskjaer, 51, has since worked part-time for UEFA as a technical observer, hinting that he might never return to the dugout.
If he does, it won’t be with Molde, though. Norwegian outlet VG report that chairman Leif-Arne Langoy contacted Solskjaer this week but got no response. It’d be a different story if United were to come calling, though, as he’d be more than happy to return.
“If the family [United] asks, I would say yes every day of the week,” Solskjaer revealed during a Q&A at the Oslo Business Forum in September. “It feels wrong to talk about jobs that other people have now, but I would say yes, of course.”
Solskjaer would also be interested in becoming manager of Norway’s national team at the end of current boss Stale Solbakken’s reign. “I am a proud Norwegian,” the 51-year-old declared. “If the question comes up, when Stale finds out that he doesn’t want it anymore, I’m happy to enter into a conversation.”

Solskjaer is reportedly in the process of building a house in Kristiansund, his home island in Norway. “Now I do exactly what I want and enjoy myself,” he recently told Norwegian radio station NRK’s podcast, Bakrommet. “I’m moving in in a couple of weeks. I have reached a position where I can pick and choose, and I am lucky there. Financially, I don’t need anything.”
On his managerial prospects, Solskjaer added: “It must be something exciting enough, together with the right people. But I feel so well now that there must be something that triggers me enough for me to choose to travel from Nordmore [in Norway].
“I think that a national team could suit me, but then it can’t be on the other side of the globe. I had two options, but it would have taken half a day to travel, and there is a time difference in the picture, so I opted out. Even if I could then take part in the championship.”
