Oliver Glasner makes retirement promise and sends telling message to Crystal Palace owners

The Austrian boss has led Crystal Palace to their first major trophy with the FA Cup win over Manchester City on Saturday and now his side are back down to Premier League business against Wolves in a Selhurst Park celebration

Oliver Glasner has retired his lucky black jumper after Crystal Palace’s FA Cup triumph as he insisted the club must not be a “one-hit wonder”.

The Austrian manager started wearing the top after the defeat to Newcastle last month. And his side have since gone six matches unbeaten, including the famous Wembley win over Manchester City for their first major trophy.

England internationals Adam Wharton and Marc Guehi will be out injured for tonight’s final home Premier League game against Wolves with promises to be another victory party. But also missing will be Glasner’s now famous Boss sweater.

“It is already in the washing machine,” he laughed. “It’s job is done. You won’t see it tomorrow! It goes back into the drawer. It won’t be in use at football games anymore!”

Glasner and his family left the celebrations on Saturday night without singing or experiencing chairman Steve Parish’s karaoke routine. He said: “If I start singing, then everybody would leave.”

But Glasner still missed his home nation’s victory in the Eurovision Song Contest. “I read about it,” he said. “It was a good weekend for Austria!”

Glasner, who said he answered all “300-400” messages of congratulations he received, is not looking too far ahead to Palace’s first European adventure. He won the Europa League with Eintracht Frankfurt in 2022. And with lowly Manchester United and Tottenham in this year’s final, Parish said he will call on Glasner’s experience in the competiton. “We’ll give it a go,” said the co-owner. “Who knows?”

But the Austrian said: “ It makes just no sense thinking and talking about the Europa League. It’s so far away. I think this could be the biggest mistake you can do. My only thoughts are how we can improve our game, how we can improve as a team. here won’t be big changes.

“I think from a financial perspective, Crystal Palace will never be a top four club in England. I think this club got promoted in 2013. Since then, this club has always progressed. Not huge steps. You can be a one-hit wonder. But then you’re back. Then you’re gone.

“It just makes no sense. That’s why we said our planning shouldn’t be: ‘Now we play in Europe. We do crazy things and everything collapses’. We follow the pathway.

“Now we get a special reward. We can play in Europe. But we don’t leave our pathway. This pathway didn’t start with Oliver Glasner. It started with the new owners in 2010. For me the next step is to play between eight and 12 in the Premier League.”

Asked about agreeing a new contract, Glasner said: “I have one more ear on my contract so we are not in a rush.”

Wharton, who suffered concussion, will also be out for the final game of the season at Liverpool but Guehi could return on Sunday.
