Pillows can become a breeding ground for bacteria over time, and failing to wash them can result in unsightly yellow stains that are difficult to remove. But an expert has shared a simple trick to eliminate the stains
Pillows are often neglected in the laundry routine, but not washing them can lead to a build-up of bacteria, saliva, and sweat, causing those hard-to-shift yellow stains. Over time, unwashed pillows can turn into a hotbed for germs and unsightly discolouration.
Laundry guru David Smith from Down and Feather has come forward with his top tips for reviving your pillows and banishing those persistent yellow marks. He explained: “There are a few tried and tested methods that can help reduce or eliminate yellow stains from your pillows and pillowcases, and plenty of them can be accomplished with everyday household staples.”
While reaching for bleach might seem like a no-brainer for whitening pillows, it’s actually a bad move as it can break down fibres and ruin the fabric, reports the Express. Rather than resorting to bleach, which fails to properly address fabric stains, there are gentler, more eco-friendly options that do the trick, like hydrogen peroxide.
The pro swears by hydrogen peroxide for tackling tougher stains, claiming they can disappear within 10 to 15 minutes. His advice is simple: “Mix equal parts hydrogen peroxide and water. Dab the solution onto the stained areas, let it sit for a few minutes, and then rinse with water.”
“Make sure to test a small, hidden area first to ensure it doesn’t damage the fabric.” Hydrogen peroxide isn’t just for pillows it’s a versatile cleaner for other tough spots, including bed sheet stains and dirty grout.
When dealing with somewhat dingy white bedding, David recommends taking it outdoors. He said: “Sunlight can help naturally bleach and freshen pillows. After spot treatment or washing, hang the pillows in direct sunlight to dry.”
“Rotate them occasionally for even exposure and ensure they are completely dry before using them again.” After you’ve retrieved your pillows from the line, they ought to be white, fresh, and clean once more, guaranteeing a restful night’s slumber.
