Cairo has plenty of wonderful things to offer – but air quality isn’t one of them.
Despite being a top tourist hotspot, Cairo, Egypt’s capital city, has been revealed as one of the world’s most polluted destinations. According to a study by DIPNDIVE, the city, which draws in 14.9 million visitors each year, tops the list of ten destinations with the highest pollution levels.
The research analysed these locations based on their average annual visitor numbers and assessed pollution levels using key indicators such as the Air Quality Index, PM2.5 concentrations (tiny air particles harmful to health), water quality index, and noise levels. These metrics were then amalgamated into a pollution score to rank cities by environmental conditions.
Cairo’s Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 160, indicating unhealthy air conditions. To put this into perspective, an AQI that’s deemed normal and healthy is around 36.
Furthermore, Cairo’s PM2.5 concentrations reached 68.4 g/m3, significantly exceeding the WHO’s recommended safe limit of 5 g/m3.
Despite its high pollution levels, Cairo remains a hugely popular tourist destination, boasting the Great Pyramids of Giza – one of the wonders of the world. But it’s not just the Pyramids that draw crowds – this stunning city has something for everyone to admire, reports the Express.
The Egyptian Museum, the oldest archaeological museum in the Middle East, houses over 17,000 artefacts. It’s a treasure trove of mummies and sarcophagi, perfect for a day of exploration. However, it can get crowded, so an early start is recommended.
The River Nile, one of the world’s most famous rivers, meanders through the city. A boat cruise down this iconic waterway offers stunning views of the cityscape.
Despite its pollution issues, Cairo remains a fantastic destination with plenty to offer.
