Consultant Urological Surgeon, Doctor Mark Laniardo revealed the worrying sensation that could be indicative of a cancerous tumour growing in the prostate.

Prostate cancer symptoms need to be investigated by a healthcare professional

Dr Laniardo said: “The prostate is a small, walnut-sized gland found only in men. It sits just below the bladder and surrounds the urethra (the tube that carries urine and semen out of the body).”

If cancerous cells accumulate in the prostate, it will take some time before symptoms emerge.

Dr Laniardo explained: “Prostate cancer occurs when cells in the prostate gland begin to grow uncontrollably. Some prostate cancers grow slowly and may never cause harm, but others are aggressive and can spread quickly.

“That’s why understanding what prostate cancer is and getting checked early can make all the difference.”

If cancer is present, “feeling tired” is a sensation that might emerge, but there are other signs to be aware of too. Dr Laniardo said: “Most men with early-stage prostate cancer won’t notice any symptoms.

“As it develops, signs can include needing to pee more often, feeling tired, back pain, and leg weakness, experiencing erectile dysfunction, or blood in the urine or semen.”

These symptoms could also be indicative of non-cancerous urological issues, but they should be reported to your GP. At the doctor’s clinic, you might be referred to a blood test to check for prostate-specific antigen in the blood.

Dr Laniardo elaborated: “If a man experiences a raised PSA level, then it doesn’t always mean it’s cancer. It could also flag an infection or an enlarged prostate, but it’s an essential first step in spotting potential problems.”

Dr Laniardo added: “There’s still a common misconception that prostate testing always involves a digital rectal exam. While a digital rectal exam can be part of a prostate check, it’s not always necessary, especially in the early stages.”

Dr Laniardo emphasised: “The earlier we detect prostate problems, the more treatment options are available.”

Anybody experiencing troublesome symptoms are best advised to book a doctor’s appointment in order to rule out the possibility of cancer.

Should cancer be diagnosed, the earlier it’s caught, the better chances of a full recovery.
