One summer mistake that could cost drivers their insurance, warns expert

With Britain having continuous heatwaves, motorist are being urged to ditch one common trick that could see insurance claims rejected should thieves strike when they’re not looking

Drivers have been warned that leaving car windows open in UK heatwave could ‘invalidate insurance’.

With the heatwaves the UK has enjoyed this year, drivers are being warned that a common trick to keep cars cool could end up costing them big.

Motoring experts at Dick Lovett say leaving your windows open in hot weather may actually void your insurance – and even see claims rejected if your vehicle is targeted by thieves It comes after drivers are told they can cut car insurance ‘instantly’ by telling their insurer one thing.

How to keep your car cool without risking your cover

To help drivers survive the sweltering conditions, the Dick Lovett team shared four expert-approved tips:

Park in the shade when possible

“Strategically parking your vehicle in shaded areas, such as underneath trees or in underground car parks, significantly reduces how much the internal temperature will rise. If shade isn’t available, position your car so the sun hits the rear window instead of the dashboard.”

Use sun shades and window covers

“Reflective sun shades are essential for keeping your car cool. They work by reflecting sunlight away from your car interior, drastically reducing how hot it gets. And if you’re travelling with children or pets, they’re great at protecting your passengers from direct sun exposure.”

Protect your seats and steering wheel

“Dark interiors absorb more heat and can become dangerously hot to touch, making it uncomfortable for you, the driver, and your passengers.

“When you’re not driving, protect your seats and steering wheel by covering them with light-coloured towels or seat covers to stop them from getting too hot.”

Consider tinting your windows

“Window tinting reduces how much sunlight can pass through your windows and will protect your car’s interior from harmful UV rays. However, if you do choose to tint your windows, the front windscreen must allow at least 75% of light through, and the front side windows must allow at least 70%, otherwise you risk a £60 Fixed Penalty Notice and 3 penalty points on your license.”

Dick went on to further explain how leaving windows slightly open to ventilate can actually invalidate your insurance – making your vehicles vulnerable to theft: “Insurance companies classify this as negligence, which could lead to them rejecting theft or vandalism claims.

“Instead, use reflective window shades, park in shaded areas, or position your car so the sun hits the rear window rather than the dashboard to help keep the interior cool without putting your car at risk.”
