Only 2% of people can find the 89 within 7 seconds in an optical illusion of 99s

By staff4 October 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Can you find the 89 in less than seven seconds? Only 2% of people can – those who can are likely to be at the very top level of puzzle solvers – here’s how to do it

A new brainteaser is leaving most people scratching their heads, with only a small fraction able to spot the number 89 in less than seven seconds.

The task involves hunting for the number 89 hidden amongst a sea of 99s. Set against a black background and written in bright purple, it’s proving to be a tough nut to crack for many.

Surprisingly, the vast majority fail to spot the elusive number within the seven-second mark. A whopping 98% are unable to do so within the time limit, with a mere 2% managing to beat the clock.

The teaser has left many baffled, despite seeming straightforward at first glance. Its deceptive simplicity makes it appear easy, but it’s actually far more challenging than it initially seems.

Obviously, the 99s stand out clearly, and human brains struggle to make sense of the puzzle, first featured in IndiaTimes.

It’s all too easy to overlook the number – after all, you’re essentially searching for an eight buried amongst a multitude of nines.

If you manage to spot the 89, you join the ranks of the elite few who have already cracked it. While it can be a bit frustrating, it’s also a fun way to pass some time in our hectic world.

Fancy giving it a go? Try to spot the glaring error within seven seconds and if you succeed, you’ll prove to your mates and family that you’ve got a sharp mind!

Keeping your noggin in tip-top shape is known to boost cognitive performance, enhance memory, and aid focus and attention. Some even reckon that regular brain workouts can stave off the symptoms of dementia.

Many Brits turn to brainteasers and puzzles as a way to keep their grey matter ticking over, and it’s believed that adding a dash of speed to these can ramp up the benefits even more.

In return for regularly flexing your mental muscles, you’ll find that your mind is sharper and that your memory and cognitive abilities are on the up. Plus, brainteasers are a right laugh – what better way to outdo your mates than to set the timer and see who can crack it first?

Meanwhile, you can officially pat yourself on the back if you find the odd cat in a tricky puzzle within seven seconds. Alternatively, fancy trying to locate the correctly spelled word here?

Or perhaps challenge yourself to find the panda amongst the humans in this puzzle within seven seconds. Another puzzle dares you to identify five specific items within an image of three people and a dog. If you can spot them within 15 seconds, you’re labelled a ‘genius’.

Alternatively, you could try and uncover your worst personality traits with this optical illusion.
