Ovens will be sparkling clean with simple 8p tip that removes burnt-on grease

By staff15 July 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Cleaning experts have shared their top tips for getting oven doors looking as good as new – and they all involve simple household items that you’re likely to have laying around

The kitchen is undeniably one of the most challenging rooms to keep spick and span. Despite your best efforts, there always seems to be a mess lurking somewhere – with the oven often being the main offender.

Given that this is where we cook most of our meals, it’s prone to getting covered in stubborn grease stains, dirt and grime, particularly on the glass. Letting it accumulate will only exacerbate the problem, so regular cleaning is essential.

And it turns out, you can do this with a simple 8p item you likely already have at home.

According to the experts at Ideal Home, you don’t need any special products or tools for a gleaming oven door, reports the Express.

How to clean oven glass

If your oven is especially dirty, you may want to fill a dish with water and a few spoonfuls of white vinegar, and allow it to sit in the oven on a low heat for around 30 minutes. This will help to dislodge any burnt parts, making it easier to clean.

However, if you’re grappling with some truly stubborn stains, then a humble dishwasher tablet could be the answer. These compact yet potent cleaning products are engineered to dissolve grease stains from food, so it’s logical to use them for oven cleaning.

All you have to do is moisten one in water and use it to gently scrub away any burnt-on food marks on the glass. The slightly coarse surface makes it perfect for eliminating stains.

You might need to wet it a few more times if it dries out, but one tablet should suffice for your entire door.

Then, simply give the oven door a good wipe and all those stubborn marks should vanish. Even better, this trick is incredibly cost-effective, with a pack of 40 dishwasher tablets costing just £3.38 from Asda – just 8p per tablet.

Another budget-friendly and straightforward oven cleaning hack involves just one natural ingredient – a lemon. The citric acid in these fruits makes them highly effective at tackling grease stains, and when combined with baking soda, their power is amplified.

All you need to do is halve a lemon, sprinkle the flesh with baking soda, and then scrub it over the glass in circular motions. The oven grease should come off quite easily, but if you’re dealing with a particularly grimy oven, you might need a few more lemons.
