Manchester United have completed the £30m signing of defender Patrick Dorgu from Lecce and he will don a number previously worn by some big names
Patrick Dorgu will wear the number 13 shirt at Manchester United after completing a £30m move from Lecce.
The Denmark defender, 20, was paraded in front of his new fans before Sunday’s Premier League game at Crystal Palace. And by wearing 13 he follows in the footsteps of cult hero Ji-sung Park and club legend Brian McClair.
Third-choice goalkeeper Lee Grant was the last to have it during the 2021/22 season while previous stoppers include Mark Bosnich, Anders Lindegaard and Roy Carroll. Further back both Gary Neville and brother Phil, as well as Ryan Giggs, have donned the number early in their careers.
Dorgu has worn the number ever since his time with Midtjylland and it had been his number at Lecce. He has also worn it for the national team.
Dorgu has put pen to paper on a contract until June 2030, with the option of an additional year.
And the versatile defender said: “I am incredibly proud to be able to call myself a Manchester United player; this is a very special day for my whole family.
“I cannot wait to work with Ruben Amorim; his vision for this team and the future of the club is incredibly exciting. There is a clear plan set out for my development, and I feel that Manchester United is the perfect place to fulfil my potential and complete my huge ambitions.”
Jason Wilcox, Manchester United’s technical director, said: “Patrick is a really exciting talent; his strong defensive and attacking attributes, adaptability and work-rate will make him a key part of Ruben Amorim’s squad.
“Patrick has had a superb start to his career, and at the age of just 20, we know he will continue to develop under the guidance of our excellent coaching team.
“Patrick is the latest exciting young player that we have brought into the club.
“We believe that each of these talents has world-class potential and the ability to play a key role in achieving the success that everyone at Manchester United is striving for.”
