Paying for luggage fees could be avoided by using ‘fisherman’ tactic

By staff30 April 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

People were saying this trick could be ‘life changing’ for those who tend to overpack their suitcases

Airlines can be quite strict about fitting your items within the luggage limits. What you’re allowed to bring on board will vary depending on the company you have chosen to fly with, making narrowing which essentials to bring with you and what to leave at home tricky.

However, Chelsea, who goes by the username Cheapholidayexpert online, shared a trick as part of a series of tests to see how savvy you could be about bringing all your essentials abroad without spending more on extra fees. She had previously tested whether she could get away with stuffing items into a neck pillow or slipping them into a duty-free carrier bag.

The frequent traveller went on to use a jacket that worked perfectly for this task. Filming herself at an airport, Chelsea showed off her £10.99 Amazon purchase—a fishing vest covered in pockets.

She managed to fit a bikini, some gym clothes, a speaker, deodorant, her passport, a deck of playing cards, a power bank charger, as well as her AirPods and purse into the jacket fishermen often wear. With the help of her partner, she made use of the giant back pocket to also squeeze in a laptop as well.

She predicted that her “super stylish” attempt would be a success. In fact, she was so convinced she didn’t attempt to hide her genius jacket full of items as “you’re allowed pockets. Right?”

She goes on to film herself successfully passing through the airport to her boarding gate – all whilst wearing the jacket that looked fit to burst. She told the camera: “It worked, that is definitely another win for not paying for any luggage!”

People were wowed by trick in the comments section – but others were unconvinced they’d go through with it. One said: “This and cargo pants [would be] life changing!”

Another added: “I spent so long looking for a travel jacket with tonnes of pockets. I don’t know why I never thought of this!” A third commented: “My friend always wears her denim jacket for this exact reason. It’s got so many pockets on it to store stuff!”

However, some pointed out flaws in the plan. Someone asked: “What about going through security?” And, Chelsea responded: “You always take your jacket off at security! And they’re not checking allowance, just liquids and illegal items!”

There was another concerned TikTok user who asked: “Do you have to sit in it throughout the flight? I feel like that would be too much!”

The specific fishing vest that Chelsea used is no longer available on Amazon. However, the online marketplace sells plenty of alternatives, or you could check out a sporting goods shop like Decathlon and Go Outdoors.
