TikTokers say ‘this is obvious’ as the boss of McVitie’s speaks out on the ‘incredible debate’ about chocolate digestive biscuits
People are just realising they’ve been eating one of the most popular biscuits wrong. McVitie’s chocolate digestives have been around for 100 years, but now it seems we may not have been eating the iconic sweet treat correctly.
McVitie’s general manager Anthony Coulson recently spoke up about the possibility that most people have been eating these biscuits incorrectly. He told the BBC that most people have been eating chocolate digestives the wrong way up – and he explained why.
The tasty chocolate digestive has been made at McVitie’s for a whole century, but Mr Coulson has just informed chocolate biscuit lovers that the chocolate digestive should be eaten with the chocolate side facing downwards.

Mr Coulson told BBC Radio Manchester: “One of the very first things I learnt when I got to join McVitie’s was chocolate side down to eat the digestive. It’s the world’s most incredible debate, whether you have the chocolate on the top or the chocolate on the bottom.”
He admitted that up until then, he’d “always eaten it the other way round”. He added that it’s a personal choice, and it’s up to people how they eat their chocolate digestives, but he explained the logic behind his statement.
The theory behind the upside-down chocolate digestive munching is that the chocolate begins to melt. The flavour is said to be better this way, and Mr Coulston added that it “just makes sense”.
So have we really been eating the chocolate digestive the wrong way up for 100 years – well, it seems that many have actually been snacking on them with the chocolate bottom side down already. TikToker ‘FoodWithASB’ put out the debate to his thousands of followers recently – and most people commenting said they already ate digestives with the chocolate facing down.
One follower commented, saying: “I always knew it was on the bottom, I thought it was obvious.” Kieran West wrote: “I used to always say this but everyone with disagree.”
Another TikToker wrote: “This is obvious – the chocolate on the tongue gives more taste.” And another poster agreed, writing “well if you eat it with the chocolate on the bottom the chocolate touches your taste buds first”.
However, on TikTok, Hunter replied, stating “but it comes out the packet chocolate side out”. Bluestreak also wasn’t sure, writing: “But you’d get melted chocolate on your hands.”
So although we tend to think of a chocolate digestive being coated in chocolate, with the sweet melty stuff on the top side – that could be the wrong way around. The McVities company reportedly said that the biscuits underside is dipped into a ‘chocolate reservoir’ when they are being made, so the chocolate coats the bottom half of the biscuit during this process.
Some 80 million packets of digestive biscuits are made each year in the Manchester-based McVities factory – it’s certainly one of the nation’s favourites. The McVities factory has been open since 1917 and the chocolate digestive first became available in 1925, it was a follow on from the plain digestive which was first manufactured in 1892.
