A foodie shared a clip of a watermelon foaming in a video that has been viewed more than 500,000 times – and people have been left horrified after they were told to throw their watermelons away
If you’ve ever sliced into a watermelon and witnessed fizzing or frothing, one TikTok sensation alerts you that it “could be dangerous” advising you to bin it rather than take a bite.
TikTok user @idksterling cautioned: “If this happens to your watermelon, throw it away immediately.”
The social media guru, followed by a whopping 6.3million, elaborated: “Many people seem to be confused as to what’s causing this”. He revealed that his followers had tagged him in a clip showing a fizzy melon, seeking his expertise about the strange occurrence.
He informed his fans that encountering a bubbling watermelon might “be your first time seeing a foaming watermelon” but reassured them these events are not “that uncommon”.
Moreover, he commented that at times the foam could appear “much more pronounced” than showcased in the clip he was commenting on, taking on a whiter, “frothy” look.
So why does this mean it’s time to bin the juicy fruit?
“This is the result of leaving a watermelon in a place that is too hot and not ideal to preserve it”, he stated. “This is essentially the result of gas and pressure building up in the watermelon and then eventually foam being released.”
Based on what he’d seen, if you were to dissect the original watermelon, its interior would be unappealing, to say the least.
He concluded by pointing out it is “not the best idea” to nibble on the melon when it exhibits such symptoms because the “fruit is rotting” and can become a “prime breeding ground for certain types of bacteria”.
These bacteria can “give you food poisoning”, he warned, advising you to chuck it in your food waste bin to “immediately dispose of it”.
In the comments section, one person owned up: “I ate that once.” Meanwhile, another user admitted: “I’ve been eating them like that.”
Some commenters pointed out that a watermelon would probably smell “foul odour” if it was foaming like that, adding more reason to bin it.
A woman recounted her own experience, saying: “I got food poisoning from eating a bad one that my mom had cut up.”
