People who buy Apple or Windows laptop issued urgent message

By staff30 August 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

If you have one of these laptops already, or have just bought one, you need to make sure you do this one crucial step

People using Apple or Windows devices have been advised by the Government to take one crucial step to safeguard themselves – and their finances.

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), a UK Government organisation, offers guidance and assistance to both public and private sectors regarding computer security threats.

In a post, officials urge technology users to download an anti-virus product.

This is key as it is specifically “designed to detect and remove viruses and other kinds of malicious software from your computer or laptop.”

Malicious software – commonly referred to as malware – consists of code created to harm your computers, laptops, or the information stored on them.

By installing software designed to eliminate these threats, you could prevent your personal information from being compromised – and your bank account from being emptied.

Take this one step immediately

The experts explain that “antivirus software is often included for free within the operating systems that run Windows and Apple computers. If you make sure that this built-in antivirus is switched on, you’ll instantly be safer.”

Encouraging people to take one action and activate this feature immediately – they also advise people on what antivirus product to use. They suggest: “New computers often come with a trial version of a separate antivirus product installed (such as McAfee, Norton and Avast).”

The experts remind people:

  • when the trial version expires, you’ll have to pay (or register) to continue using it
  • separate antivirus products won’t always work alongside the built-in antivirus software and could even stop it from working completely
  • there are so many products available you may want to carry out your own research to find out which is right for you

How does anti-virus software work?

Antivirus software safeguards your device by identifying, isolating and removing harmful code, stopping malware from inflicting damage. Most antivirus programmes update automatically in order to protect your device – just make sure you have the auto updates turned on.

How do I use my antivirus product?

Encryption with a padlock icon on the virtual interface. Cybersecurity concept Global network security technology. Privacy and data protection.
Have you secured your laptop yet?
  1. When you first install (or switch on) your antivirus product, run a full scan to make sure your computer is free of all known malware
  2. Make sure your antivirus software is set to automatically scan all new files, such as those downloaded from the internet or stored on a USB stick, external hard drive, SD card, or other type of removable media
  3. Make sure your antivirus software is set to receive updates automatically

Do I need antivirus on my smartphone and tablet?

The NCSC advises that this isn’t necessary provided you only download apps and software from official sources like the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. It’s also vital to enable automatic updates for your apps and device.
