Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola had an animated post-match discussion with goalkeeper Stefan Ortega after his side let a two goal lead slip against Brentford
A lip-reading expert has revealed what Pep Guardiola told Stefan Ortega after the pair had a heated post-match discussion.
The incident occurred after Manchester City had just squandered a 2-0 lead against Brentford, with Yoanne Wisa and Christian Norgaard scoring in the last ten minutes to earn the Bees a point.
After the game, Guardiola was seen having an animated chat with goalkeeper Ortega and defender Josko Gvardiol. When asked what he told the pair, Guardiola insisted he was actually praising them.
“[Gvardiol] played incredible! I was satisfied! The same with [Ortega],” he said. “I said how good he played, the actions with the ball, the pass to Erling [Haaland], how happy and satisfied I am, especially with these two players and what they have done…”
But lip-reader Jeremy Freeman has now detailed exactly what Guardiola told Ortega, revealing to the Daily Mail that he said the goalkeeper should “take that yellow”. It appears as though the City boss was telling Ortega should have looked to slow things down in the last ten minutes and risked getting booked for time-wasting.
Reflecting on the result, Guardiola admitted City “didn’t take the right decisions in the final third to close the game”. Speaking to TNT Sports, the Spaniard said: “We’re a bit disappointed but at 2-0 up we didn’t manage to hold on to the lead and unfortunately we couldn’t close the game.
“Today we didn’t take the right decisions in the final third. I had the feeling that we didn’t take the right decisions in the final third to close the game. With the absence of the central defenders, Rodri, with many things, we are not [at our best] and we didn’t take the right decisions.
“It’s fine, it’s not a good place to come. Unfortunately, we couldn’t win. I don’t know [why City are struggling to hold on to leads], it can happen. Sometimes it happens. We have to manage a little bit better but today was not bad.”
And City star Phil Foden, who scored both of their goals, suggested they slipped up against Brentford because they were “tired”. Foden toldTNT Sports: “We just looked tired at the end, the last 20, 30 minutes.
“We looked leggy and they put the pressure on and put longer balls into the box. We didn’t cope with the physicality at the end. It’s one of the toughest places to come and they give you different challenges.”
