Perfect home for trainspotters as former station goes up for sale

By staff21 August 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

The Old Station, in Little Salkeld, Cumbria, was closed to the public in 1970 and converted into a private residence in the 1980s – but it has still retained the feel of a station

This one-of-a-kind home is a trainspotter’s dream, offering the opportunity to reside in a former station on a railway line. The property, priced at £375,000, is situated on the tracks of the 73-mile long Settle to Carlisle line in the north of England.

Known as the Old Station, it was shut off from the public in 1970 and transformed into a private dwelling in the 1980s. However, the house, nestled in Little Salkeld near Penrith, Cumbria, has managed to maintain its original station charm.

Spanning across two acres, the property opens with an entrance hall adorned with a flagstone floor, exposed stone walls and ornate arched windows, which once served as the station lobby. The living room, previously the waiting room and ticket office, still features a stone-edged recess marking the old ticket hatch.

The master bedroom takes up the space of the former station master’s office, boasting gothic-style windows, high ceilings and the preserved mechanism of the William Potts clock. Other bedrooms include one that was formerly the fuel store and lamp room – complete with the original coal hatch window – and another that used to be the ladies’ cloakroom.

The kitchen and adjoining utility room have been cleverly repurposed from the former ladies’ and gents’ rooms, while the ensuite bathroom was once a porter’s room. Having only changed hands three times in its history, the Old Station showcases Victorian craftsmanship and stands as a testament to the famed Settle to Carlisle railway line.

Constructed by the Midland Railway Company from locally sourced Eden sandstone, boasting walls two feet in thickness and crowned with a Westmorland slate roof, this remarkable dwelling is hitting the market for the first time in nearly three decades.

The station ceased public operations in 1970 before being transformed into a private home during the late 1980s.

Priced at £375,000, the property boasts manicured gardens complete with a greenhouse, storage shed and a substantial detached garage.

Estate agents PFK said: “This is a rare opportunity to acquire a property of such historic significance and unique charm. Rich in original detail yet thoughtfully adapted for modern living, The Old Station offers not only a beautiful home but a piece of living railway history in a tranquil rural setting.

“Built by the Midland Railway Company using locally quarried Eden sandstone, with walls an impressive two feet thick and topped with a Westmorland slate roof, this striking building is a showcase of Victorian craftsmanship.”
