Perrie Edwards admits world ‘crumbled’ after losing baby and ‘worst bit’ came days later

Former Little Mix star Perrie Edwards has opened up about the trauma of losing her baby five months into her pregnancy as she spoke openly about the loss

Perrie Edwards has said her world “crumbled” when she lost her baby five months into her pregnancy and added that the “worst bit” came a few days later.

The singer is currently preparing for the birth of her second child and opened up about the two losses that overshadowed the birth of her first son Axel. During an appearance on Paul C Brunson’s podcast, Edwards revealed that she suffered a miscarriage before Axel’s birth and lost another baby afterwards, when their heart stopped beating at 22 weeks.

She added in a recent interview that the “traumatic” experience was made worse when she discovered that she was producing milk days later. “It felt like it came out of nowhere,” Edwards said about the miscarriage. “Every scan before had been fine, we just weren’t expecting to go into the 22-week scan and for our world just to crumble.

“And then the whole experience was very traumatic. A few days later, I remember being in the shower and my milk came in. I remember just going out the room like, ‘Mum!’, and she was like, ‘What, what, what?’, and I was like, ‘I’ve got milk!’

“She was like, ‘Oh, darling, they said this would happen.’ But I just wasn’t expecting it. I was devastated. That was the worst bit. My body was prepared for the baby, but the baby was gone.”

In the interview, which was with Glamour, Edwards said her fiancé, former footballer Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, was instrumental in helping her navigate the loss, but admitted he needed help as well, even if he couldn’t see it.

“We are very lucky to have each other,” she said. “We love each other so much. He was just so worried about me, and I think he felt the lack of control, like there was nothing he could really do.

“But him just being there, and being by my side through the whole thing, just made it so much better. I kept asking him, “Are you okay?”, and he’s like, “It’s not about me,” and I’m like, “Yes it is though”. We both lost a baby. We both went through it. He’s very like that with emotions, he tries to just suck it up and move on. But I could see that he was traumatised about it. I think he just wanted to try and be strong for me.”

Now, Edwards isn’t just preparing for the birth of her second child, she’s also preparing for the release of her debut solo album, Perrie. The singer is the final member of Little Mix to release solo music. Former band-member Jesy Nelson dropped a single in 2021, while the rest of the band continued to stay together. Little Mix are on a hiatus currently and Leigh-Anne Pinnock released an album in 2024, while Jade Thirlwall’s hotly anticipated debut album, That’s Showbiz Baby!, hit the shelves earlier this month.

Edwards said all her bandmates are supporting her solo career. “It’s wild. But we just love each other so much, we just want to see each other do well and see each other win,’ she said. ‘We’ll always message each other, because we know we can depend on each other for advice.

“It is fun doing the solo stuff and seeing how different we all are individually, but I think that’s why Little Mix worked so well, because our different personalities and tastes just worked for the group.”

The album will be released on 26 September and Edwards has implied Nelson’s difficult split from the group has been alluded to in one of the songs. When asked which song was toughest to write, she said Same Place, Different View. “It’s about somebody else, I was very cautious of how I was saying things.

“It’s about a friendship that I once had, that I no longer have anymore. We talk about breakups and heartbreak, but we don’t normally talk about friendships that break down. And it was like losing a limb.

“I was with her every day. We lived in each other’s pockets. We were the best of friends, we were so close, and we did everything together. To then not have her in my life anymore was a big thing for me. I found it really hard to adapt.”
