Petrol and diesel cars cost different amounts to service – but there’s a catch

A mechanic has explained on TikTok why drivers shouldn’t rule out diesel cars despite them needing more services on average than their petrol fuelled car counterparts

A TikTok mechanic has shared some insider tips on why diesel cars shouldn’t be dismissed, despite their reputation for needing more frequent servicing than petrol models. The car guru and garage proprietor, known as Ray, advises diesel owners to service their vehicles every 10,000 kilometres or 6,213 miles at most.

In his viral TikTok video, Ray (@rayseurotech) goes even further, suggesting a service every 8,000 kilometres, or 4,970 miles, for those driving diesel. He points out in the clip that diesels demand more regular servicing than petrol cars to avoid carbon build-up issues.

While petrol engines can also suffer from carbon deposits, it’s typically less of an issue compared to what’s seen in diesel engines, reports the Express.

Carbon build-up within diesel cars can:

  • Reduce engine performance
  • Lower fuel economy
  • Increase emissions
  • Raise maintenance costs
  • Restrict exhaust flow

But Ray offers reassurance, stating: “If you get a service [maintenance] done on time [with a diesel engine] more often, then you won’t have any problems [additional repair costs that you may experience with a petrol motor despite maintenance].”

He specifies that the service he mentions is crucially an oil change.

Stressing the significance of using the manufacturer-recommended oil for diesel engines, Ray warns against skimping with cheaper oils.

In another TikTok post, Ray suggests that buying a diesel car makes the most sense for those who average over 20 miles of driving each day.

He clarified that driving shorter distances with a diesel engine could lead to more problems than with a petrol engine.
