The remains of Gursimran Kaur, 19, were tragically found inside the walk-in oven of the Walmart she worked at in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on October 19 by her distraught mum
The horrific death of a Walmart worker who baked to death in a walk-in oven after a colleague spotted a “leakage” is not being treated as suspicious, according to police.
Gursimran Kaur, 19, was tragically found inside the walk-in oven of the Walmart she worked at in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on October 19 by her distraught mum, who had became concerned after she had been missing for over an hour. Kaur’s mum went to the bakery section to try and find her daughter when a colleague noticed a “leakage” coming from the walk-in oven.
Tragically, when the mum opened the door, she discovered her daughter’s charred remains. Emergency services were called to the store where they confirmed Kaur had died inside the oven.
“Gursimran Kaur was only 19 years old, a young beautiful girl who came to Canada with big dreams,” a spokesperson for the family said in a GoFundMe appeal. “Imagine the horror that her mother experienced – who herself opened the oven. As you all know, her charred remains were found inside the walk-in oven in the bakery after a few hours.”
The store remained shut througout the investigation as it conducted renovations – including removing all walk-in ovens. Now, police have concluded their investigation, which was initially called “complex”.
“The police investigation determined the death is not suspicious and there is no evidence of foul play”, said the Halifax Police Department on Monday. “Investigators met with family to share this update and extend condolences. Our thoughts remain with them at this difficult time.”
Police did not indicate a cause or manner of death. Gursimran was a member of the local Sikh community, having lived in Canada for around three years. Her dad and brother are living in India and trying to travel to Canada, with money raised by the GoFundMe helping to cover travel expenses.
“Our deepest thoughts remain with the family and our associates as they continue to grieve,” Walmart Canada spokesperson Amanda Moss told USA Today. “Our store remains closed as we complete the renovations that were already underway. We look forward to welcoming customers back to a remodeled store in the coming weeks.”
