A 37-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of child neglect following the death of a baby boy. Emergency services were called to Culford Drive in the Barley Green area of Birmingham after reports of a child having a medical emergency at 4.30pm on Wednesday.

West Midlands Police said the tot was taken to hospital, where he died despite the efforts of medics. The woman, who was arrested on suspicion of child neglect, remained in custody today being quizzed by police. A force spokesperson said “We were called to reports of a baby having a medical emergency at an address in Culford Drive, at around 4.30pm yesterday.

“The baby was taken to hospital, where he sadly died. A 37-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of child neglect, and she remains in custody for questioning.

“We understand the concerns of the community of this incident, but we would ask the public not to speculate on the circumstances.” Residents told the BBC the baby’s death was “heartbreaking” and the cul-de-sac was a “friendly” community.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called to a medical emergency at a private address on Culford Drive, Bartley Green at 4.36pm. Two ambulances, a paramedic officer and a MERIT trauma doctor with a critical care paramedic were sent to the scene, whilst a Community First Responder was also in attendance.

“On arrival, crews found a baby in a critical condition receiving CPR and ambulance staff immediately took over to administer advanced life support before conveying to Midlands Metropolitan University Hospital. Sadly, despite everyone’s best efforts, the baby could not be saved and was confirmed dead shortly after arrival at hospital.”
