Police race to Thornaby as kids ‘digging for treasure’ make chilling discovery

By staff17 June 2025No Comments2 Mins Read

The children were reported to have digging for ‘treasure’ while playing in a ‘den’ they set up in a field in Thornaby, North Yorkshire when they made the discovery buried underground

A police cordon has been set up around a playing field after children digging for ‘treasure’ found several bullets.

The incident is said to have unfolded in Thornaby, North Yorkshire yesterday as the youths played in a ‘den’ they had set up in the field. More than half a dozen police vehicles were spotted at the scene yesterday evening, and local residents said armed police officers have been in the area overnight. Forensic officers have also been spotted on the playing field. A large police presence remains at the scene this morning, and it is understood further inquiries are being carried out.

Neighbours said the children, who were playing in the bushes, discovered a large number of bullets and a magazine.

They informed one of the children’s grandparents, who then called the police.

A child was reportedly heard at the scene saying: ‘We’ve found a load of treasure.’

One aerial photograph shows two police vehicles lined up on the field behind a large cordoned-off area, which backs onto a row of semi-detached houses.

The Mirror has contacted Cleveland Police for comment.
