New parents are waving goodbye to a once hugely popular baby name, according to the lastest data, and it will come as a shock to many
Baby name trends always come and go, but one popular moniker has been completely wiped off the chart.
While some parents opt for traditional names, others go for something more unique and unheard of. And one name that had skyrocketed in popularity in 2023 is now on the brink of extinction, and nowehere to be seen in the newest baby name data.
In the latest list of the top 100 baby names for boys and girls, there are some old favourites still at the top including Olivia and Muhammad, but 2025 signifies the end of one name in particular.
According to the BabyCentre data, Nova is falling out of favour. The formerly on-trend name that saw a huge surge in popularity in 2023 was awared 94th place in the list, but all of a suddden, the celestal star inspired name has completely dropped out of the chart.
Faye Mingo, Chief Marketing Officer at BabyCentre, said: “The top names for both boys and girls have remained largely consistent with last year’s picks, but a few notable trends have emerged. Surname-inspired names for boys like Hunter and Harrison are on the rise, and there’s a trend of girls’ names ending in ‘a,’ like favourites Olivia and Amelia.
“It’s clear that while parents are embracing some fresh twists, the classic choices still hold strong, and parents are looking for a name with timeless appeal.” It comes after the Office for National Statistics (ONS) released its annual figures for the most popular baby names in England and Wales last month.
Similarly, popular name Lilly has been a firm choice for years, but the spelling has caused a divide. Previously being spelt with double L, this option has wilted, and spelling it Lily, has boomed. Names such as Margot and Gabriella have made the list for the first time, as parents are opting for a little sophistication.
If you’re looking for some inspiration, or simply just curious to see which names have made the list – or haven’t – the list is below.
