Popular European city celebrating Oktoberfest with €2.65 pints – and it’s not Munich

Oktoberfest is the world’s largest folk festival and is held annually from September 20 to October 5 this year, originating in Munich.

While many people flock to the German city for the celebrations, there are also parties held all over the world too. Oktoberfest is an ancient tradition that started in Bavaria more than 200 years ago.

It combines a beer festival with a funfair, but now there is another city that is predicted to overtake Munich when it comes to the festivities, as the average price of a beer in Munich stands at an average of €15.25 (£13.20) people are looking for cheaper alternatives.

City break experts Travel Republic have revealed a new ranking of the most popular European cities where you can celebrate Oktoberfest to ensure the best experience. So don your best dirndl or lederhosen, and get celebrating!

They revealed Cologne may now become the most popular place for Oktoberfest, with a 400 per cent increase in Google searches in the past month. Located in West Germany, the historic city of Cologne stands as the region’s cultural landmark.

The city is not only famous for its Gothic architecture but also for its Oktoberfest celebrations. Located in the neighbouring town of Düsseldorf (which is just a quick drive from central Cologne), visitors can enjoy traditional German beer and music paired with “spectacular party atmosphere”. It takes just 90 minutes or less on a flight from the UK, and is a much cheaper alternative to visiting Munich.

In second the experts predict Zurich, Switzerland will be another popular choice, after seeing a 328 per cent rise in searches for the city’s festival in the past month. Zurich’s Oktoberfest is packed with beer tappings, a craft beer bar, a shooting gallery, and traditional live music.

In third is Manchester, with a 217 per cent search increase for Brits looking to party. The beer festival takes place at First Street in the city centre with wonderful German music, food and steins of beer, served in the blue and white Bavarian atmosphere.

Barcelona has also been named as one of the best places to celebrate Oktoberfest, as 12,000 Brits have searched for the festival over the past month.

Attracting over 10,000 attendees every year, Barcelona’s Oktoberfest brings all the traditional aspects of the famous Munich festival, including beer, music, and food, but at a fraction of the cost. With entry free during the day and the average cost of a pint being only €2.65 (£2.30), a whole €12.60 lower than its Munich counterpart, Barcelona is the perfect destination for any British beer lover.
