Popular retro sweets spotted in supermarket decades after being discontinued

By staff22 August 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Popular retro sweet back in the supermarket after 27 years and it only costs 31p, here’s where you can grab the infamous 1980s sweet and not miss your chance in indulging

A legendary 1980s sweet treat, costing only 31p, is making a comeback after being discontinued back in 1998 and changed to the popular Starburst.

Opal Fruits, the original name were one of the most beloved sweets by the British public. It first came into the market in 1959, as the fruit-flavoured chewy sweets with the catchy slogan : “Made to make your mouth water.”

An Opal Fruits pack would contain the four flavours: blackcurrant, lemon and lime, orange and strawberry. One inquisitive shopper shared on Facebook that he had spotted the retro sweet. According to the shopper, the sweets are being sold for just 31p. He wrote on Facebook: “Bargain find in Tesco’s, 31p, reduced to clear, not sure all of them are at the price.”

Another excitedly said, “Opal fruits…I loved them!” One jolly fan of the sweets said: “Opal fruits made to make your mouth water. Good to see these back.”

Aldi also brought back a celebrated sweet just recently too. Fritt Chewy Candy bars were seen back on the shelves for 95p each. The candy bars come in three flavours – Raspberry, Cherry and Grapefruit. And each pack having six sour candy strips. People online were raving over this return: “Oh my god I haven’t eaten them since I was a child! They are amazing!”

This has not been the first time since Opal Fruits made their comeback to the market. Back in 2021 they returned for 12 weeks only in July and in the four original flavours: strawberry, orange, lemon and lime

They became Starburst to match the US branding and the lemon and lime sweets were merged into one flavour and instead blackcurrant was added.

The limited edition came back costing £1. And many took to social media to share their happiness. One said how exciting it was and how lemon Opal fruits were their favourite and “now they’re retro and making a comeback!”

Mars did say at the time that once these supplies run out they would not bring it back. The head of fruit confections at Mars Wrigley at the time said: “Our sweet factory has been working overtime to make sure Brits who love their retro treats get their fruity fix one last time before Opal Fruits disappear from shelves forever.”

Another company spokeswoman added that “When they’re gone, they’re gone.”

However Mars also temporarily brought back Opal Fruits the year before in 2020, again for limited time period of 12 weeks. And it’s back again this year. It seems like Brits are not done with the fruit-flavoured confectionary and would be thrilled for a full return.
