Poundland announces locations of 12 more store closures – see full list

By staff12 August 2025No Comments5 Mins Read

Poundland has released a new list of stores that will be closing down before the end of September, making their total number a significant 52 – here’s where they are

Poundland is a British variety store chain founded in 1990 which once sold most items at the single price of £1, including clearance items and brands. The struggling brand, which is in competition with many other discount retailers, was recently sold for a nominal one pound to investment firm Gordon Brothers who are set to restructure it's offering and close many stores. Poundland has revealed the locations of another 12 shops earmarked for closure as part of its restructuring scheme, taking the total identified so far to 52.

These form part of 68 stores scheduled to shut under a restructuring plan unveiled following Poundland’s acquisition by investment firm Gordon Brothers from Pepco Group in June. Thirteen of these 68 have already closed, including 10 last Sunday, on August 10.

Furthermore, Poundland has recently disclosed the locations of 15 stores closing on August 17, and 12 branches that will cease operations on August 24.

The budget retailer has now pinpointed the following 12 set to shut after these. It comes as a man claimed ‘I work at Tesco and there’s one thing I hate doing for customers’.

The shopping centre is named after Captain George Vancouver, a native of King’s Lynn, who is famous for his exploration of North America’s northwest Pacific Coast, the Hawaiian Island and southwest Australia. Vancouver and Vancouver Island in Canada are named after him.

Of the latest group, 11 are confirmed to close on August 31, with the last to shut on September 14. This means Poundland has now revealed the locations of all but 16 of the 68 stores destined for closure.

Poundland remains bound to leases on shut stores until its restructuring plan receives approval from the High Court and creditors – the hearing scheduled for August 26. The retailer has shared their anticipation for additional closures over time as their leases expire. Their expectation of their estate stands at a contraction from roughly 800 stores to 650-700.

“When a store nearby closes, we understand how disappointing that is for customers, but nevertheless look forward to welcoming them to another Poundland store in the future,” said Poundland retail director Darren MacDonald.

He added that the affected staff had entered a formal consultation process which would explore any suitable alternative roles. The Grocer reported that the staff working at the latest confirmed stores were already briefed on their closure last week.

Poundland’s restructuring plan also features the drastic decision to remove frozen food from its stores, halting online trading and retiring its Perks loyalty app, which was only launched last year.

The company’s frozen and digital distribution centre in Darton, South Yorkshire, is set to close this year, with its national distribution centre at Springvale in Bilston, West Midlands, following suit in early 2026. Stores will be supplied from its remaining two distribution centres in Wigan and Harlow.

Gordon Brothers has agreed to invest £80 million in the turnaround, having reportedly purchased Poundland for a mere £1. This follows a recent trading update from parent company Pepco Group revealed that between April 1 and the completion of the sale on June 12, Poundland’s revenue fell by 10.3 percent to €347m.

Like-for-like sales were down 7.1 percent during the same period – and simultaneously, the number of Poundland stores decreased by 19, from 818 to 799.

Interestingly, three of the 68 stores had already shut their doors when Poundland announced its restructuring plan on 17 June. These were located in Swiss Cottage (closed April 20, 2024); Chiswick (closed May 28, 2025); and Southampton West Quay (closed June 9, 2025).
