Prague Airport terminal ‘closed’ amid ‘possible presence of explosive’

By staff17 July 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Prague Airport took to social media to confirm that Terminal 2 had been partially closed after the discovery of the ‘possible presence of an explosive’ as police were called

A major airport in a city loved by British tourists was “closed” after possible explosives were found in a secure area.

A section of Prague Airport was temporarily shut today after an urgent police operation was launched this afternoon. The airport’s Terminal 2 was shut following the “possible presence of an explosive”, according to local cops. The major European airport announced the temporary closure in a X post, saying: “For security reasons, access through the central security checkpoint in Terminal 2 has been temporarily suspended. A police operation is currently taking place on site. As a precautionary measure, part of Terminal 2 has been temporarily closed to the public.”

A bomb squad rushed to the airport this afternoon and quickly closed one of their airport’s two terminals.

The bomb squad had issued a statement, which said: “Based on the notification, we immediately took security measures due to suspicions indicating the possible presence of an explosive. Foreign Police pyrotechnicians are already on site.”

Police confirmed fears around a suspected explosive device had launched the emergency response. On X they wrote: “Based on the announcement, we immediately implemented safety measures due to a suspicion indicating the possible presence of an explosive.”

Prague Airport later confirmed the central security checkpoint at Terminal 2 had been reopened, but did not reveal what exactly caused the scare.

During the lockdown, raging passengers took to social media to share their anger at the closure. One person said: “So what people suppose to do with their flights? Any information?”

At the time, flyers were urged by the airport to check with their airlines for updates and potential delays amid the chaos. The airport said: “Please contact your airline regarding your flight. Thanks for understanding.”

Prague Airport is a major European hub, for travellers seeking history or fun in the city. The airport handled over 16 million passengers in 2024 alone.

Jiří Vyskoč, Executive Director of Prague Airport Aviation Business Development, said: “During this summer season, we handled a total of 10.9 million passengers – on arrival and departure combined – which is 14.5% more year-on-year.

“We are approaching the record performance of 2019, when we handled over 12 million passengers in the summer. We expect to reach this level as early as in the next summer season.” Vyskoč added that most passengers fly in from the UK, Italy and France.

This has not been the first time an airport has been partially shut due to a scare around possible explosives. Heathrow’s Terminal 3 was evacuated in May following reports of a bomb threat.

At the time, the airport said “our teams responded to a potentially suspicious article in Terminal 3. As a precaution, a small part of Terminal 3 was temporarily evacuated while the authorities conducted the appropriate checks”.
