Premier League clubs in talks with DWP in bid to tackle young people not in work

By staff24 September 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Department for Work and Pensions chief Pat McFadden will today outline plans alongside top clubs to tackle the rising number of young people not in education or employment

Premier League clubs are in talks with ministers to support youth hubs and help unemployed youngsters get into work.

New DWP chief Pat McFadden will today outline plans alongside top clubs to tackle the rising number of young people not in education or employment.

The new Work and Pensions Secretary will unveil a £25million boost to double the number of youth hubs to over 200 locations, including at football clubs and libraries. They provide youngsters between 18 and 21 with CV advice and career guidance.

The DWP said that every Premier League club is now in talks with the government over hosting a youth club. Mr McFadden is also set to sign a deal today with the English Football League and Rugby Football League to become partners.

According to the latest figures there were around 948,000 young people between the ages of 16 to 24 labelled NEETs – not in employment, education or training in April to June 2025. This was a 24,000 increase on the previous three months, official data shows.

Mr McFadden, who will visit Crystal Palace Football club today, said: “The number of young people not in education, employment or training is unacceptably high, and this government will not stand by while so many are robbed of their potential and our country of its future.

“Through our £25 million expansion of Youth Hubs and partnerships with the Premier League and other key organisations, we’re creating real opportunities for the next generation, ensuring support is targeted to those most in need.”

Clare Sumner, chief policy and social impact officer at the Premier League said: “The Premier League is proud to support the expansion of Youth Hubs so young people, whatever their background, can access the opportunities, support and inspiration they deserve.

“Between 2022 and 2025, the Premier League has invested £1.6 billion into wider football and communities, helping support people of all ages who need it most, and create more chances for young people to learn and grow.

“By working in partnership with Government on the Youth Guarantee, we can build on this foundation and ensure youth hubs offer even more opportunities to help young people thrive.

She added: “Together we are showing how football is more than a game, reaching those who need support most, helping them fulfil their potential and strengthening communities nationwide.”
