Premium Bonds are a type of savings product run by National Savings & Investment (NS&I) but instead of earning interest, you’re entered into a monthly prize draw
Two Brits have woken up millionaires as April’s Premium Bond prize draw winners have been announced. The first big winner for this month is from South Yorkshire, who held £43,165 in Premium Bonds.
The winning bond number – 494WG724922 – was purchased three years ago in March 2022 and had a value of £20,000. The second new millionaire came from Hertfordshire and had £50,000 invested in Premium Bonds.
This lucky winner bought the winning bond, 418AW560890, in October 2020 and it had a value of £30,000. It’s not just about the £1million jackpot. The second prize of £100,000 was won by 78 people overall, and the majority of them held a maximum of £50,000 in Premium Bonds. However, one person held much less, with only £2,000.
However, one lucky winner of £50,000 bought their winning bond for just £25 and they held £10,000 in the account. This month, National Savings & Investments (NS&I) handed out just under six million prizes worth a total of £412million this month.
All the big winners were published on NS&I’s website today, and further details about this month’s Premium Bonds prize draw will be published by tomorrow. What are Premium Bonds?
Premium Bonds are a type of savings product run by NS&I – but instead of earning interest, and getting a guaranteed return on your money, you’re entered into a prize draw each month. The prizes range from £25 to £1million.
All Premium Bonds prizes are free of UK Income Tax and Capital Gains Tax, so winners can keep the entirety of the money they win. You get a unique bond number for every £1 invested, and you can invest from £25 up to £50,000 in total in Premium Bonds. If you need to withdraw your funds, you can cash in all or part of your Premium Bonds at any time.
The more Premium Bonds you buy, the more unique numbers you have entered into the draw. However, only Bonds held for a full calendar month can be entered. So, if you buy some bonds today – you will not be put into May’s prize draw – you will be entered into June’s.
The odds of a bond winning each month are 21,000 to 1 for every £1 bond, and most prizes are for smaller amounts. There are always two millionaire jackpot winners each month.
How to check if you’re a Premium Bonds winner
You can use the NS&I online prize checker tool, or the Premium Bonds prize checker app, to see if you’ve won. If you’re a winner, you can have the money paid into their bank account, or reinvest it into new Premium Bonds.
You should be emailed or sent a text message from NS&I if you’ve won. You will need to have your bond numbers to use NS&I’s prize checker, which you can find on your bond record or through the NS&I app. You can also ask your Amazon Alexa by saying: “Alexa, have I won the Premium Bonds?’
