A historic town in Devon hosts a traditional Christmas market in December and there’s nothing like it.
A magical Christmas market and late-night shopping experience is taking place at one of Britain’s most popular tourist destinations this December, offering families the perfect festive outing.
Devon and Cornwall, traditionally summer hotspots, transform into peaceful winter retreats during the colder months – and visitors can now experience the enchantment of South West Christmas markets. One Devon town sees its streets “filled with crowds” who flock to enjoy an “old-fashioned traditional Christmas experience”.
In Tavistock, nestled amidst moorland, the town’s Dickensian Evening is a “magical late-night shopping event that transports you back in time” as local shopkeepers “embrace the spirit and dress up in traditional attire”.
Tavistock’s Pannier Market comes alive with seasonal aromas and a stunning selection of beautiful gifts, all offered by independent traders, providing brilliant Christmas present ideas.
This ancient market stretches back centuries to 1105 – and the welcoming stallholders are more than happy to discuss their products with shoppers, reports the Express.
The town centre itself boasts numerous independent retailers who all extend their opening hours on Friday, December 5, 2025 – when the Tavistock Dickensian Evening takes place. Visit Tavistock’s website described the event’s atmosphere: “The smell of chestnuts cooking on steam engines will waft through the streets bringing excitement to children and adults alike.
“Shops will be open late, and the town will come alive with entertainment on every corner.
“The streets are filled with crowds who come to enjoy the old-fashioned traditional Christmas experience.
“There will be stilt walkers, choirs, bands, street entertainers all performing throughout town. For children there’s an old-fashioned merry-go-round fairground ride and candy floss.”
Throughout the high street, stunning Christmas lights sparkle, and there’s another wonderful sight to appreciate amongst the shopping as Tavistock’s Annual Christmas Tree Festival takes place in the Parish Church of St. Eustachius.
Bordered by Dartmoor, there are plenty of other destinations to explore around this delightful town – and in Tavistock there’s much more to discover whilst enjoying the festivities. The town is edged by a picturesque river with some beautiful walks.
Tavistock offers something a bit different – and what’s more, you can shop for something unique too, which is particularly satisfying around Christmas time.
The market town has a relaxed atmosphere, whilst simultaneously offering numerous welcoming pubs, cafes and restaurants as well as accommodation options, ideal for a festive getaway.
