Located just a stone’s throw away from Liverpool, New Brighton has recently undergone a £60 million refurbishment – and needs to be the next staycation on your bucket list
You’ve heard of Brighton, but have you ever heard of New Brighton? Situated at the northeastern tip of the Wirral peninsula, this seaside resort is home to the UK’s longest promenade, stretches of golden sandy beaches, and an iconic lighthouse built back in 1830.
Around 283 miles away from the Brighton down south we all know and love, New Brighton is just a stone’s throw from Liverpool – making it ideal for holidaymakers not wanting to spend a gruelling five hours in the car for some sand and candy floss. While good weather can never be guaranteed in both Brightons, New Brighton is a great place to build sandcastles and have a cheeky paddle when the sun makes its rare appearance.
There’s also the bustling Victorian Quarter which is filled with independent bars, coffee shops, vintage stores, restaurants and even a street art trail that will satisfy any Instagram addict. Finish your day off at the beach at the Floral Pavillion – Wirral’s largest theatre for a spot of comedy, kids shows, and pantomime!
It’s no wonder that travel experts over at Rough Guides recently listed New Brighton as one of the top 30 seaside resorts in the UK, hailing the town as a ‘place of pilgrimiage’ for photography fans due to the work of Martin Parr, who shot his iconic series The Last Resort in the area. “New Brighton has undergone a £60 million refurbishment in recent times, with new restaurants and bars, and the coast on the other side of the Wirral peninsula (a 25-minute drive) is a pretty day-trip,” the pros said. “While you’re there, try West Kirby, cute Thurstaston beach and eerie Parkgate.”
For those wanting to break a sweat on their vacation, the Championship Adventure Gold won Wirral’s Attraction of the Year award in 2014, and has a slew of five star reviews. There’s also the North East Cycle Route for those wanting to take in the stunning landscape while burning off their fish and chips. And of course, you have to finish the night off testing your luck at the arcades!

Accommodation in New Brighton varies depending on your budget and needs. For example, a stay in a budget double room at the independent Holland House would set you back £170. This is based on two people staying two nights from Friday, February 7 – 9. A more ‘luxury’ one bed apartment with sea views is priced at a staggering £502 on the same nights.
New Brighton is just 25 minutes on the train from Liverpool Lime Street, with single tickets costing as little as £4. If you’re travelling up from the big smoke, expect a journey around four hours, with at least two changes. Single fares will naturally be much higher, setting you back around £76.
