Primark’s ‘glamorous’ new bag looks similar to a designer version for a fraction of the cost
Primark is selling a new £16 bag that resembles a designer alternative. The high-street retailer has long been popular thanks to its affordable fashion, and Primark’s latest style is a hit with shoppers.
Fashion fans love the Paula Echevarría Metal Shell Clutch. It was featured in a recent TikTok video shared by @abstephens, alongside the £16 Paula Echevarría Straw Seashell Clutch Bag.
Abi wrote: “Run to Primark for these bags,” and an excited viewer replied: “Love them.” Another said: “Stunning,” and a fan added: “Primark is so good for holiday essentials.”
As eagle-eyed shoppers may have noticed, the Paula Echevarría Metal Shell Clutch looks similar to a Chloé bag, available at Harvey Nichols. However, Chloé’s Sea Treasures shell box clutch is much more expensive at £4,190.
There are several similarities between Primark’s offering and the designer alternative. Both clutch bags draw inspiration from conch shells, and the brands have opted for gold designs with a clasp fastening and detachable strap.
However, Primark has opted for a glossy finish. Conversely, the Chloé bag has a textured design, meaning the gold tone is much more muted, and it has shell charms.
The materials differ, too. While Primark’s bag is 100% plastic, Chloé opted for a metal clutch bag with leather lining, presented in a designer box.
The product description for Primark’s bag reads: “Add some shine to your look with this golden tone metal shell clutch from the Paula Echevarría collection. Designed in a sculptural shell shape with a glossy finish, it’s fitted with a secure clasp fastening to keep your essentials tucked away.
“The detachable cross body strap lets you switch between handheld and hands-free styling with ease. Perfect for evenings out, special occasions, or when you just want a bit of sparkle.”
Meanwhile, the new season designer bag is described as a “Chloé metal box clutch” with a “shell design, detachable chain shoulder strap with shell charms, leather lining.”
Primark’s take on the trend could impress shoppers looking for a similar design for less. Primark’s bag is not available for click and collect. Shoppers can locate their nearest store here.
However, Primark is not the only retailer drawing inspiration from seasells this season. Several designer and high-street brands have shared their own take on the popular style.
For instance, Selfridges offers a £355 Cult Gaia Nala pleated metallic-leather clutch bag, inspired by scallop shells. The leather clutch boasts a shell design, brand plaque at side, and one main compartment.
Elsewhere, Zara offers a £55.99 Metallic Shell Minaudière, again inspired by conch shells. The description says: “Box bag. Metallic finish with a shell shape. Chain crossbody strap. Metal clasp fastening.” The main bag is made from 100% copper, while the strap is 100% brass and the lining is 100% polyester.
