During a recent event, Prince Harry was quizzed as to why he and his wife, Meghan Markle, have been photographed separately on a number of occasions of late. His seven-word reply made his stance crystal clear
Earlier this month, Prince Harry was forced to deal with cruel rumours surrounding his and Meghan Markle’s marriage, with their string of solo appearances sparking whispers of a divorce. And he responded with a witty seven-word comeback.
The Sussexes, who often work together as a team through their Archewell Foundation, have recently branched out to work on their own projects. On December 5, Harry attended the 2024 New York Times DealBook Summit, while Meghan remained thousands of miles away in California to attend the Paley Honors Fall Gala alongside Tyler Perry.
Meghan, 43, was seen posing on the red carpet alongside actor and filmmaker Tyler Perry, who famously helped the couple out in their time of need, giving them full use of his Beverly Hills mansion and security after they made their bombshell move across the pond.
Meanwhile, Harry, 40, faced a grilling at the New York-based summit, where NYT columnist Andrew Ross Sorkin quizzed him about why he and his wife had been photographed apart so frequently.
Laughing off the gossip he’s had to contend with of late, Harry cheekily replied: “Because you invited me, you should have known.” Poking fun at the divorce rumours, Harry joked: “Apparently, we’ve bought or moved house 10, 12 times. We’ve apparently divorced maybe 10, 12 times as well. So it’s just like, what?”
Adding that “it’s hard to keep up with, but that’s why you just sort of ignore it”, Harry went on to jest that he felt rather sorry for the trolls commenting on the state of their marriage, remarking that their “hopes are just built and built, and it doesn’t happen”.
In an interview with The Sun, royal author Hugo Vickers argued that Meghan and Harry’s separate appearances are likely part of a larger strategy for their careers going forward, as opposed to reflecting any marital turmoil behind the scenes.
He explained: “Harry’s much better when he’s on his own talking about things without her there. And perhaps she’s better off doing what she does without him there because he always looks a little bit spare. You could suggest that she’s making a move to be an independent person in her own right, I mean, we know who she is now, thanks to her marrying Prince Harry. She’s got much more of an identity.”
This comes as Harry, Meghan and their children Prince Archie, five, and Princess Lilibet, three, prepare to spend another Christmas away from the royal festivities currently underway at Sandringham. Opening up in a recent interview with Marie Claire, mum-of-two Meghan shared what their family Christmases now look like after leaving palace life behind.
Revealing that “every year it gets better” as her kids reach an age where they understand what’s going on, Meghan reflected: “At first, I think as a mum with children, you’re just enjoying having them there, but they’re not understanding everything that’s happening yet. But now we’re at the age where I just can’t wait to see it through their lens every year.”
