Pumpkins won’t go mouldy and will last until Halloween if coated with homemade solution

A gardening expert has shared an effective method for preserving pumpkins right until Halloween arrives

Halloween is fast approaching, which means it’s time to begin preparing your eerie decorations. An absolute must-have is a perfectly carved pumpkin glowing with a candle, reports the Express.

Whether you’re cultivating your own pumpkins in your garden or allotment or intend to purchase one from the shops, you needn’t wait until October 30 to buy one. Gardening expert Michael Griffiths revealed a tried-and-tested technique for keeping your pumpkins fresh until Halloween without fretting about them going mouldy.

You simply need to follow a handful of straightforward steps. Michael’s approach will help you extend your pumpkin display until Halloween comes around.

How to preserve Halloween pumpkins

This method can be applied to lengthen the lifespan of both newly harvested pumpkins and shop-bought varieties. First, give the pumpkin a thorough cleanse in the sink using some washing-up liquid.

Once the pumpkin has been washed completely, pat it dry. Combine one tablespoon of bleach with a litre of water in a spray bottle.

Michael said: “If you’re going to carve your pumpkin, do that now.”

Should you have carved your pumpkin, ensure you spray the interior and edges as well. Michael explained: “This gets rid of mould, mildew and other unwanted stuff. This will keep your pumpkin looking fresh a little bit longer.”

Dousing the pumpkins with a bleach mixture will help sanitise them and eliminate any bacteria that would cause rapid deterioration. Uncarved pumpkins can last for months if stored in a cool, dry place with good air circulation.

However, carved pumpkins usually only last between three to five days, although this can be extended up to two weeks with the right care in a colder climate or by keeping the pumpkin in the fridge.

So, if you’re planning on carving pumpkins for Halloween, it’s best to leave it until the last minute. That being said, it doesn’t mean you can’t keep the uncarved ones for a few weeks for a lovely autumnal display.
